Dr. Asimov on "The Star Spangled Banner"

"All Four Stanzas"

By Isaac Asimov

I have a weakness--I am crazy, absolutely nuts, about our national anthem.

The words are difficult and the tune is almost impossible, but frequently when I'm taking a shower I sing it with as much power and emotion as I can. It shakes me up every time.

I was once asked to speak at a luncheon. Taking my life in my hands, I announced I was going to sing our national anthem--all four stanzas.

This was greeted with loud groans. One man closed the door to the kitchen, where the noise of dishes and cutlery was loud and distracting. "Thanks, Herb," I said.

"That's all right," he said. "It was at the request of the kitchen staff."

I explained the background of the anthem and then sang all four stanzas.

Let me tell you, those people had never heard it before--or had never really listened. I got a standing ovation. But it was not me; it was the anthem.

More recently, while conducting a seminar, I told my students the story of the anthem and sang all four stanzas. Again there was a wild ovation and prolonged applause. And again, it was the anthem and not me.

So now let me tell you how it came to be written.

In 1812, the United States went to war with Great Britain, primarily over freedom of the seas. We were in the right. For two years, we held off the British, even though we were still a rather weak country. Great Britain was in a life and death struggle with Napoleon. In fact, just as the United States declared war, Napoleon marched off to invade Russia. If he won, as everyone expected, he would control Europe, and Great Britain would be isolated. It was no time for her to be involved in an American war.

At first, our seamen proved better than the British. After we won a battle on Lake Erie in 1813, the American commander, Oliver Hazard Perry, sent the message "We have met the enemy and they are ours." However, the weight of the British navy beat down our ships eventually. New England, hard-hit by a tightening blockade, threatened secession.

Meanwhile, Napoleon was beaten in Russia and in 1814 was forced to abdicate. Great Britain now turned its attention to the United States, launching a three-pronged attack. The northern prong was to come down Lake Champlain toward New York and seize parts of New England. The southern prong was to go up the Mississippi, take New Orleans and paralyze the west. The central prong was to head for the Mid-Atlantic States and then attack Baltimore, the greatest port south of New York. If Baltimore was taken, the nation, which still hugged the Atlantic coast, could be split in two. The fate of the United States, then, rested to a large extent on the success or failure of the central prong.

The British reached the American coast, and on August 24, 1814, took Washington, D. C. Then they moved up the Chesapeake Bay toward Baltimore. On September 12, they arrived and found 1000 men in Fort McHenry, whose guns controlled the harbor. If the British wished to take Baltimore, they would have to take the fort.

On one of the British ships was an aged physician, William Beanes, who had been arrested in Maryland and brought along as a prisoner. Francis Scott Key, a lawyer and friend of the physician, had come to the ship to negotiate his release. The British captain was willing, but the two Americans would have to wait. It was now the night of September 13, and the bombardment of Fort McHenry was about to start.

As twilight deepened, Key and Beanes saw the American flag flying over Fort McHenry. Through the night, they heard bombs bursting and saw the red glare of rockets. They knew the fort was resisting and the American flag was still flying. But toward morning the bombardment ceased, and a dread silence fell. Either Fort McHenry had surrendered and the British flag flew above it, or the bombardment had failed and the American flag still flew.

As dawn began to brighten the eastern sky, Key and Beanes stared out at the fort, tyring to see which flag flew over it. He and the physician must have asked each other over and over, "Can you see the flag?"

After it was all finished, Key wrote a four stanza poem telling the events of the night. Called "The Defence of Fort M'Henry," it was published in newspapers and swept the nation. Someone noted that the words fit an old English tune called "To Anacreon in Heaven" --a difficult melody with an uncomfortably large vocal range. For obvious reasons, Key's work became known as "The Star Spangled Banner," and in 1931 Congress declared it the official anthem of the United States.

Now that you know the story, here are the words. Presumably, the old doctor is speaking. This is what he asks Key

Oh! say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,

What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,

O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?

And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.

Oh! say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave,

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

"Ramparts," in case you don't know, are the protective walls or other elevations that surround a fort. The first stanza asks a question. The second gives an answer

On the shore, dimly seen thro' the mist of the deep,

Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,

What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep.

As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?

Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,

In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream

'Tis the star-spangled banner. Oh! long may it wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

"The towering steep" is again, the ramparts. The bombardment has failed, and the British can do nothing more but sail away, their mission a failure.

In the third stanza, I feel Key allows himself to gloat over the American triumph. In the aftermath of the bombardment, Key probably was in no mood to act otherwise.

During World War II, when the British were our staunchest allies, this third stanza was not sung. However, I know it, so here it is

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore

That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion

A home and a country should leave us no more?

Their blood has washed out their foul footstep's pollution.

No refuge could save the hireling and slave

From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave,

And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

The fourth stanza, a pious hope for the future, should be sung more slowly than the other three and with even deeper feeling.

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand

Between their loved homes and the war's desolation,

Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n - rescued land

Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserved us a nation.

Then conquer we must, for our cause is just,

And this be our motto--"In God is our trust."

And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

I hope you will look at the national anthem with new eyes. Listen to it, the next time you have a chance, with new ears.

And don't let them ever take it away.

Misunderstanding our code

The Jerusalem Post Internet Edition

Is Judaism anti-gentile? This question – as old as the Bible itself – reared its head again in Russia this past week. A group of Moscow nationalists seized upon the publication of a translation of the Shulchan Aruch – Rabbi Joseph Caro's 16th-century Code of Jewish Law – as affirming a clear bias against non-Jews and sought to indict the general Jewish community as racist.

While the suit has been dismissed, the controversy will undoubtedly go on and should be addressed.

On a textual level, there is no doubt that one can select laws or statements from the vast body of Jewish literature and make a case for virtually any position, including negative attitudes concerning non-Jews. As the Talmud spans half a millennium and covers a wide geographic area, it is understandable that opinions expressed therein will be as varied as the individuals expressing them. Thus, there are indeed declarations that non-Jews are cruel, that their actions are morally reprehensible, and that their testimony as witnesses is not reliable.

Yet it must be understood that these sentiments invariably reflected the prevailing mood of the time. When Jews were persecuted by their hosts – and that, alas, formed a good part of our historical experience – the result was a backlash of mistrust, caution and downright animosity. Yet when times were better, such as in the early years of the Babylonian exile, the text reflected it, as in Samuel's declaration that on the Day of Judgment there will be no distinction between Jew and non-Jew.

One must also draw a separation between those non-Jews who simply practiced another form of religion and those who engaged in idol worship.

The vast majority of pejorative remarks regarding non-Jews were reserved for idolaters, who were considered by Judaism to be the antithesis of what a human being should be, spiritual obstructionists who subverted God's plan for humanity. The average non-Jew was regarded with equanimity, eligible for entry into Paradise via observance of the Seven Noahide Laws.

The rabbis were also hypersensitive to intermarriage and intermingling between Jews and non-Jews, seeing them as a dire threat to Jewish uniqueness and purpose. Numerous laws that appear to discriminate against non-Jews, such as the prohibition of drinking wine or feasting together with them, were meant to create certain social barriers that would preserve our particularity.

One of the most misunderstood concepts in Judaism is that of the law of lending. While usury is forbidden from a fellow Jew, we may accept interest from a non-Jew. This was viewed as a slur on the gentiles and we suffered greatly for it.

But this was never meant to be a negative comment on the world at large, rather a positive statement about our fellow Jew. Lending money – even at interest – is a hesed, a kindness; those who are in need of money to save their homes, their land or their lives will gladly pay a fee to borrow the money. No one expects to be given money for free. But as an added show of solidarity and love for our Jewish brothers, we not only lend them the funds, we waive the interest.

Far more important than the textual references to non-Jews is the practical way in which we related and relate to them. And there is no question that actions speak louder than words, confirming an approach based on respect and value for other human beings, Jewish or not.

Our greatest leaders – Abraham, Moses, Solomon – related to a wide variety of people of diverse faiths. Rabbi Judah the Prince had much respect for the Romans and was a close friend of Emperor Antoninus. Enlightened Gentile rulers throughout history, who were able to rise above the baser urges of the street, viewed Jews as loyal, model, desirable citizens who would invariably enhance any country in which they resided.

NORMATIVE JEWISH law reflects this kinder, gentler approach. For example, a Jew who steals from a non-Jew is considered guilty of two sins: theft and the desecration of God's name. Israeli law protects the rights of non-Jewish citizens of the state, who by all accounts are treated better than their cousins in any neighboring Arab country. When a devastating earthquake struck Turkey in 1999, the rabbinate ruled that Israeli rescue teams be sent to the region immediately and every effort be made to save the lives of those buried in the rubble – even if it meant desecrating the Shabbat.

The bottom line in most situations vis-a-vis non-Jews is the concept of darchei shalom, the promotion of good relations between peoples.
A striking illustration of Judaism in practice is the example of Rabbi Moses ben Nachman –Nachmanides. The leader of Spanish Jewry in the 13th century, he was forced to engage in the famous Barcelona Debate of 1263. Though he succeeded in deflecting the charges of anti-Christianity leveled against the Jewish community, he suffered harsh indignities at the hands of the Dominicans, who sought to exile him.

Yet in his medical practice Nachmanides treated Jew and non-Jew alike. He was particularly successful in fertility treatment, helping many non-Jews to bear children. When certain members of the Jewish community criticized him for "helping to multiply the seed of Amalek," the Sage replied that his medical skills were a "gift of God, to be applied equally to all in need of them."

In our long journey through the Diaspora, one conclusion is painfully obvious: If the world had related to the Jews half as benevolently as we related to them, words like "pogrom" and "Holocaust" would never have come into being.

Nicaragua, long a beef exporter, examines lucrative kosher market

Brian Harris
The CARNIC meat packing firm's general manager, Manuel Centeno, looks over the feed lot at his company´s slaughterhouse on the outskirts of the Nicaraguan capital Managua in May 2005.
AROUND THE JEWISH WORLD
By Brian Harris
MANAGUA, Nicaragua, June 30 (JTA) — Kosher beef consumers in the United States may soon find themselves dining on meat from this decidedly non-Jewish country.

CARNIC, one of Nicaragua's largest and most storied meat packing firms, has taken the first steps toward kosher slaughter with an eye on the potentially lucrative export market.

In late April, three head of cattle were killed in kosher fashion by a rabbi flown in from New York in a trial run of what CARNIC general manager Manuel Centeno says could become a steady supply of kosher beef, if tests prove fruitful.

"We do not have the installations to produce a large amount of kosher cattle" right now, Centeno said in an interview at his office. The future of kosher slaughter for the company "depends on the success our sample has in the United States. It is a very special process; we do not have people specialized in kosher production."

CARNIC's move has piqued the interest of the tiny local Jewish community. Misled by exaggerated stories in the local media, the community thought CARNIC had conducted kosher slaughter prior to Passover and wanted to see if some fresh beef could be reserved for locals.

Centeno said that if CARNIC begins kosher production, some meat could be set aside for domestic consumption.

Rabbis in Costa Rica and Panama regularly conduct shechitah to feed their congregations, and Costa Rica occasionally exports kosher beef. However, CARNIC holds the potential to be the Central America's first mass kosher exporter.

Beef and leather long have been traditional Nicaraguan exports, with CARNIC relying on the export market for 80 percent of its business. In 2004, beef exports to the United States from the country's three authorized slaughterhouses — including CARNIC — grew by 74.5 percent to $40.3 million, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported.

However, it has been at least 25 years since Nicaragua last exported kosher beef, and renewing the trade is a risky proposition.

To produce kosher beef economically, CARNIC likely would have to devote an entire day solely to kosher production. The slaughterhouse currently processes an average of 455 head of cattle a day, which would drop on days of shechitah because of the rigors of kosher production. As a result, the plant would be depending on the premium price of kosher beef to make up for lost revenue from lower production.

If the company has to build new facilities in order to have a reliable supply of kosher beef, it won't go through with the plan, Centeno said.

CARNIC also is interested in the organic market, a lucrative niche. The conversion of some of the company's output to organic, which is already under way, makes the kosher option tempting, since both the organic and kosher markets offer premium prices.

CARNIC's primary focus is the U.S. market, but Centeno said the company has received inquiries from Israel as well about kosher Nicaraguan beef.

The inclusion of organic and kosher production is the latest twist in CARNIC's history. The company originally was founded and owned by the Samoza family, a dynasty that ran the country as a dictatorship for nearly 50 years before being overthrown in the 1979 Sandinista Revolution.

The leftist Sandinistas nationalized all of Samoza's vast holdings, including CARNIC, which remained a symbolic prize of the revolution's triumph.

After the Sandinistas were voted out of office, the company was sold off to local cattlemen as part of the pro-U.S. government's attempts to dismantle the Sandinista apparatus.

Though he has been at the firm for only six months, Centeno is no stranger to the company's history: He served as President Anastasio Samoza's chief of staff during the dynasty's final three years and fled the country when Samoza was overthrown. He returned in the early 1990s.

War dogs lap up support

The Washington Times Insider

By Jen Haberkorn
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
July 5, 2005

Military war dogs in Iraq help save lives by detecting bombs and traps and finding injured civilians, but their noses are getting chapped from the desert heat.
When Amy Nichols, owner of Happy Tails Dog Spa in Tysons Corner, heard of the dogs' tale, she bought some lip balm for their noses and set up a donation box in front of her store. The doggy day care also is collecting flying discs, knotted ropes and treats to send to the hundreds of dogs serving in Iraq.
Ms. Nichols had been looking for a cause to combine old-fashioned patriotism and dog care -- a cause close to the hearts of many of the store's customers.
"People who take their dogs to day care are really generous and supportive," Ms. Nichols said. "We hear about the dogs and get choked up about it. They're all dog lovers here."
By next week, she expects to send about 50 pounds of donations to the dog handlers in Iraq.
Schools and animal advocacy groups across the nation have held collection drives to help the dogs in Iraq, and the U.S. War Dogs Association has proposed a memorial for military working dogs and their handlers.
"It's not important what's in the package; it's the idea of sending something to these men and women and their canines ... that people in the states care about them, worry about them and wish them a safe journey," said Ronald L. Aiello, president of the association and a former Marine scout handler in Vietnam.
The association also uses donations to send about 250 care packages per year to dog handlers. The packages might include beef jerky for the handler and vegetable jerky for the dog.
Ms. Nichols' drive is not associated with the group. She contacted Master Sgt. Chris Burgess, operations chief for the 2nd Military Police Battalion at Camp Fallujah in Iraq, who compiled a list of the dogs' needs.
"Thank you for all the support," he said in an e-mail to Ms. Nichols. "I know the handlers and the dogs will appreciate it very much."
Military working dogs -- many of them German shepherds, Dutch shepherds or Belgian Malinois -- have been used since World War II. The dogs keep U.S. troops safe, but also may remind troops of their pets at home and provide a morale boost, Mr. Aiello said.
Mr. Aiello's dog in Vietnam, Stormy, was responsible for checking buildings for explosives before the Marines entered. The handlers are responsible for caring for the four-legged soldiers and relaying their messages to the troops.
"They're fantastic animals," he said. "They do a great job of alerting to danger."
Military war dogs are performing the same service for U.S. troops in Iraq.
"The [breeds] are so smart, they need stuff to do," Ms. Nichols said. "They love having a job."
But they still need time to play and time to sharpen their skills, which is why they receive the flying discs, rubber toys and ropes. Their handlers asked for sunflower seeds, sugarless gum, energy drinks, crackers, meat sticks and beef jerky.
The three-year-old doggy day care is covering the shipping costs, which Ms. Nichols expects to reach $100 to $150.
"Look at what they're asking for ... Blistex and Goldfish crackers," she said. "We could walk across the street right now and get it. It's very basic stuff."

Man calls ambulance 50 times a year, demands ride home

TAKAMATSU -- An unemployed man who often called for an ambulance to take him home after he went drinking has been found guilty of obstruction of duties and sentenced to three and a half years in prison.

Judge Hidenaga Manabe at the Takamatsu District Court called the wrongdoing of Satoshi Nakagawa "selfish."

"He committed a selfish crime by obstructing the highly urgent duties of ambulances," the judge said when he handed down the ruling on Monday.

On the night of June 8 last year, Nakagawa, 55, was sitting down on a road in Takamatsu and asked a passerby to call an ambulance for him.

An ambulance dispatched by a local fire station arrived, and Nakagawa demanded that the paramedics take him home.

The ambulance, however, headed for the fire station, not his home, which prompted an enraged Nakagawa to poke one of the paramedics in the cheek, slightly injuring him, according to police.

Nakagawa called for an ambulance about 50 times a year since August 2003 and was driven home after he had been drinking in October 2003 and in April 2004, police said. (Mainichi)

Lawmakers Introduce Bill to Eliminate Medicare Paramedic Intercept Charges

Published on Friday, July 1, 2005 5:13 PM EDT

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and Congressman Todd Platts (R-PA) recently introduced the Medicare Paramedic Intercept Services Coverage Act of 2005, legislation that would eliminate costly medical expenses for senior citizens who require advanced paramedic care when traveling to the hospital in an ambulance. Under Medicare, paramedics, called "intercepts" used mainly in rural areas, are not reimbursed. DeLauro originally learned of the problem from several constituents in Durham.

In rural areas, paramedics with extensive emergency training are not always on the ambulance crew. When a "paramedic intercept" is called in to assist a volunteer ambulance service with an emergency, Medicare does not permit the intercept to bill Medicare directly for the high costs of these services. As a result, beneficiaries are separately charged hundreds of dollars for paramedic care, leaving them with enormous medical bills they often cannot afford to pay.

"If a medical situation warrants an ambulance, the last thing a Medicare beneficiary should worry about is how much this service will cost," said DeLauro. "Beneficiaries are already struggling with the high costs of prescriptions drugs, health care and medical expenses and should not be penalized for medical costs associated with advanced needs."

"It simply does not make sense to refuse payment for services that are frequently essential to protecting lives in an emergency situation, especially when the patient has no choice whether a transporting or intercept unit is dispatched," said Platts. "This legislation would allow the paramedic intercept services to receive reimbursement from Medicare for the vital services they provide and would assist our nation's seniors with the significant costs associated with advanced life support services."

The Paramedic Intercept Services Coverage Act would make the necessary changes to allow advanced paramedic services to apply for direct reimbursement from Medicare

Re: [Frum-Jewish-Singles] Kosher Singles August Double Header!

Hi, sorry for taking three days to answer this note.

The dinner at the Lathrop House half of the event will cost $45. The cost of the Six Flags portion may vary between $23 & $27 depending on when and how many people sign up. If we get 15 people signed up by August 5th the lower price will prevail, even for latecomers! The regular admission price would be $42, by the way, so this is a significant savings.

I have to ask that all costs be pre-paid. I have to pre-pay Six Flags to get the group rate and I have to give the B&B a 50% deposit too.

As for how to get there, if you plan to drive you can view directions to Six Flags by clicking here and a clickable map by clicking here. You can view a map for the Lathrop House B&B by clicking here. Parking at Six Flags costs $10, street parking is available at the Lathrop House.

Peter Pan Bus Lines offers service to and from Six Flags New England and/or Springfield MA from places all over the Northeast. You can check schedules & fares and buy tickets from their website by clicking  here.

Amtrak also serves Springfield, click here for their website.

The bus drops people off right in front of Six Flags. The Springfield bus terminal and train station are both about two miles from the Lathrop house. I'm sure myself or other attendees who will be driving will be happy to give people a lift from Six Flags to the Lathrop House or to/from the Springfield Stations in needed.

Be Safe & Be Well everybody!

WONDER LAND

September 11 and the collapse of national unity.

BY DANIEL HENNINGER
Friday, July 1, 2005 12:01 a.m.

Fourth of July weekend begins today, and among the verities certain to occur is that every waking hour in four days people will be standing at the high wire fence near Church Street in lower Manhattan, staring at Ground Zero, at what's left of what we now call "September 11."

We know these visitors to Ground Zero will be there looking into this austere pit, because those of us who work nearby and walk past it see them there, every day. They came the moment they were allowed to on Dec. 30, 2001, at the famous viewing platform, and have come each day since, amid the disgusting cold winds of February and impossible August heat. But if their presence is a certainty, its meaning, of course, has gone up for grabs.

Nearly four years after what happened on September 11, we must now debate whether a linkage exists between that day and the war in Iraq. After President Bush associated the two several times in his defense of Iraq this week at Fort Bragg, both the House and Senate Democratic leaders pounded the linkage.

House Leader Nancy Pelosi was explicit: "He is willing to exploit the sacred ground of 9/11, knowing that there is no connection between 9/11 and the war in Iraq." Senate Leader Harry Reid said the September 11 references don't offer "a way forward" in Iraq and only remind us that bin Laden "is still on the loose." To be able to separate September 11 and Iraq into wholly unrelated realms may be possible for very smart people--but not everyone.

On a very warm Wednesday this past May, during Fleet Week in New York City, a passerby at Ground Zero encountered some 150 astonishingly young Marines in fatigues, wet with sweat after a run, standing at attention on the site's edge, outside the fence. They were from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, and they appeared to be in the middle of a formal ceremony. Yesterday the organizer of the May event, Maj. Dave Anderson, explained they were laying a wreath to honor the victims of September 11, and that the three Marines chosen to lay the wreath had earned Purple Hearts while serving in Iraq. When the ceremony ended, he said, a woman came out of the crowd, crying, and grabbed his wrist to say that her brother had died in there that day, and she said to him, "When people see you Marines doing this, they'll know that you will take the fight forward."

So it is that below the level of exquisite analysis now common in our politics, some Americans do exist who credit a connection between September 11 and events in Iraq. Perhaps there will be a poll out in a few weeks that will expose their sentiment to the greater weight and rigor of statistical science.

In time even Pearl Harbor became more a symbol than the bloody reality that ultimately hurled American forces against a Germany that didn't attack us at Pearl Harbor. But time seems to pass faster today. The first Fourth of July after September 11 was a day of national unity, in sorrow but also in belief that the U.S. had to go on offense, over there, against the force that had hit us. Now there is no unity; September 11, the war in Iraq, pretty much anything George Bush does and even Afghanistan is a fair target.

After Mr. Bush delivered the speech on Iraq that many said, rightly, was overdue, David Letterman made jokes about the war. DNC Chairman Howard Dean dismissed it as the "darkness of divisiveness" and "pandering to fear." John Murtha, the party's top spokesmen on military affairs, said, "I believe they are going to cut and run." A Times reporter announced as well that "for the first time," Afghans are "feeling uneasy about the future."

The day following the president's speech, architect David Childs unveiled the latest design of the long-overdue tower intended to replace the twin towers in downtown Manhattan. If we must have an office building in this space so the Port Authority can restart its tax flows, and if it must be a "designed" 1,776-foot-high skyscraper, Mr. Childs's building is perfectly acceptable. But no, Ground Zero is first of all about one's politics now, so for the New York Times architecture critic, Mr. Childs's tall building "is an ideal symbol for an empire enthralled with its own power."

We've watched September 11 drift from unity of purpose to unhinged vituperation. The partisanship is easy to dismiss, but I believe the Bush team's deep disdain of a hostile opposition media has caused it to miss--until now--the need to organize a home front to support the remarkable sacrifice in Iraq. This failure may prove to be the one unforgivable thing.

As to September 11's stern symbol--Ground Zero--its place is secure no matter what New York's politics dumps into the Port Authority's 16 acres. The only true memorial that will ever be--that huge hole in the ground, that zero, a filthy, ripped and awesome aftermath--has been there to see for more than 3 1/2 years.

This is what it means to visit the memorial there now. A steel fence is on all four sides. On two of them, the Port Authority has hung simple descriptions and pictures of what happened there, at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania. You can read a short history of the two towers. You can read the names of each person who died there that day. After people absorb these things, they get very close to the fence and stare into the open space. Then they take some pictures, and then they go somewhere else.

By now anyone with sufficient desire or need has come to Ground Zero. By now unfathomable numbers have seen that hole in its barest form. They have taken the experience home with them. I think September 11 is going to be properly remembered, no matter what happens in lower Manhattan now. It remains for this administration to do the same for the commitments already made to Iraq and in Iraq.

The Double Standard of Partisanship

Posted by Gary Sarrett

Democrats can say whatever they want about Republicans. It's been that way for as long as I can remember. However, when a Republican makes a remark condemning a Democrat or Democrats, it ignites a furor. Calls for resignation, rallies, and anti-(insert name of Republican here) websites begin to appear.

Recently Howard Dean has made some very controversial comments about Republicans, saying, in effect, that our party consists of white Christians who've never had to work for a living. His comments lead Dick Cheney to respond on behalf of the GOP and its followers. Cheney's comments, which weren't nearly as harsh as Dean's, were front page news. They also got a nice spot on AOL's welcome screen with a negative headline. However, when Dean's comments were made, AOL's welcome screen headline for the story seemed to be typed with elation that finally those wimpy old Democrats were fighting back against the big Republican monster.

Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) compared the treatment of prisoners at Gitmo to that of prisoners of the Nazi's, victims of Pol Pot's regime, and those in Soviet gulags. His comments only brought about scolding from Republicans. On the left side of the aisle, he was praised for stepping up to the plate and condemning American men and women that serve at Gitmo. The lesson Dick Durbin and his fellow "Blame America First" crowd want all of us to learn is that terrorists should be treated like guests at the Hyatt. Of course Democrats don't want us to harm terrorists. Terrorists hate America just as much as they do. They are both fighting the same enemy. Terrorists do it with force, Democrats with words. As some say, the pen is mightier than the sword.

Karl Rove said Democrats have been too gentle in their approach to fighting terrorism. People called for his head. How could he say such things? Well, the facts speak for themselves. Terrorists attack America. Republicans say, "Attack the terrorists!" Democrats fight for terrorists to be represented by lawyers paid for by the American taxpayer, which the terrorist aims to destroy. Republicans aggressively pursue terrorists around all corners of the globe and most of the victories against them are seldom reported in the MSM. Democrats aggressively pursue Republicans for aggressively pursuing terrorists and undermine the morale of our soldiers and the faith of our citizenry in the good work that we're doing.

As usual, Democrats found some numbers to back up Howard Dean's statement about the rich, white, Christian Republican hoodlums. Apparently, 90% of registered Republicans are white and Christian, although the never working for a living thing didn't appear in the statistic. I guess Democrats realized that they were only fighting against Christians and white people... not the working poor... because they support them!

I decided to take the time to ask a liberal why they have such a double standard, pointing out the differences in how Dean's comments were received and how Rove's comments were received. The response was typical liberal blow-hard junk that I've come to expect. The reason is because, what they say about us is all true. What we say about them is unsubstantiated. I guess we didn't pay off enough professors at Harvard to conduct studies about the make-up of the Democratic party. I give them credit though. Karl Rove just says what's true. Howard Dean says something and all the liberals in the world put their collective minds together to fudge a number that proves him correct and then cite a study to give their fake percentages some merit. That takes a lot of time.

The double standard of partisanship is alive and well. What Republicans say about Democrats is absolutely false. What Democrats say about Republicans is absolutely true, and I can give you the numbers from a study done to prove it... but don't ask me for any proof of that study because... it's just common sense!

You’re a Republican???

Wednesday, October 20th 2004

In today's America, ask a growing number of high school and college students; their teachers and professors; the self-anointed media elite and/or hard working men and women of all ethnicities, the question, "What is a Republican?", and you'll be told "… a rich, greedy, egotistical individual, motivated only by money and the desire to accumulate more and more of it, at the expense of the environment … the working poor ….and all whom they exploit…"

I am a Republican … I am none of those things… and I don't know any Republicans who are.

WHAT I AM … first and foremost, is a loving husband of some 52 plus years, the father of four and an American who's proud of his country… and his country's heritage.

WHAT I AM … is the grandson of immigrants who risked everything, including their lives and those of their children, to escape tyranny in search of freedom.

WHAT I AM … is a man who grew up during the Depression and witnessed, first hand, the effects of the Stock Market crash and the soup lines that followed. I watched as both my parents and grand parents, who had very little themselves, share what food they had with a half dozen other families, who had even less.

WHAT I AM … is someone who worked his way through college by holding down three and four jobs at a time and then used that education to build a better life.

WHAT I AM … is a husband who, at age 24, started his own business for the "privilege" of working 60, 70 and 80 hours a week, risking everything I had, including my health, in search of a better life for myself and my loved ones.

WHAT I AM … is a businessman whose blood, sweat and tears…. and plenty of them…, made it possible for me to provide a secure living, not only for my family and myself, but also for literally hundreds of my employees throughout the years. Employees, who in turn, were able to buy their own homes, raise their own families and give back to their communities and their country.

WHAT I AM … is a man who believes in God; a God who has blessed this country… and all for which it stands.

WHAT I AM … is someone who knows, if you doubt miracles exist in today's world, you need only to look into the face of those who received them … and the eyes of those who give them.

WHAT I AM … is an American who's proud that his President embraces a belief in God; proud of a President who understands, as "politically incorrect" as it may be, there is evil in this world and for the security and safety of all freedom loving people everywhere, it must be confronted… and it must be defeated.

WHAT I AM … is an American who takes comfort in the knowledge that our President refuses to allow decisions concerning the very safety and security of this nation, to be governed by the political whims of foreign governments.

WHAT I AM … is tired of hearing from leading Democrats who see only negativity in America; racism in her people; class warfare in her society and "political incorrectness" in her character.

WHAT I AM … is a former democrat who now understands that it is the soldier and not the reporter that guarantees us our freedoms of press, speech and dissent.

WHAT I AM … is a man who believes in the sanctity of life. A man who is repulsed by the pandering of the political left for votes, at the expense of the unborn.

WHAT I AM … is a husband and father who believes in the sanctity of marriage and the preservation of the family unit.

WHAT I AM … is a movie go-er who is repulsed by those insecure, socially inept, elementary thinking, ego-inflated "entertainers" who have appointed themselves "experts" in the fields of national security and geo-politics and then use their forum to attack this nation, its leaders and its actions…. much to the delight and encouragement of our enemies.

WHAT I AM … is an American who understands the difference between "censorship" and "choice". Evidently, these individuals do not, because when these same "celebrities" receive public ridicule for their offensive actions, the first thing they yell is "Censorship!". What they seem incapable of understanding is… the right of free speech and dissent is shared equally by those offended… as well as those who offend. I support and will continue to support those films and performers whom I choose to … and refuse to support those I don't. It is my right as an American … a right I will continue to enthusiastically exercise.

WHAT I AM … is a voter, tired of politicians, who, every time their voting records are subjected to public scrutiny, try to divert attention from their political and legislative failures by accusing their opponents of "attack ads" and "negative campaigning"…. and the news media who allow them to get away with it.

WHAT I AM … is a Catholic who loves his God and his Faith… and who's been taught to respect all religions whose teachings are based in love, peace and charity. As such, I am embarrassed and ashamed of those individuals, in both private and public life, whose decisions and actions are devoid of any sense of character or morals; individuals who are only driven by what's best for them … rather than what's right … often times at the expense of many …. including our national security.

WHAT I AM … is a realist who understands that the terrorist attack that murdered hundreds of innocent Russian children could have occurred here, in our heartland. That's why I sincerely believe America needs now, more than ever, a President who sees with a clear and focused vision and who speaks with a voice when heard by both friend and foe alike, is understood, respected and believed.

WHAT I AM … is eternally grateful to Ronald Reagan for having the bravery to speak out against Communism and the courage of his convictions in leading the fight to defeat it; and George W. Bush for the vision, courage, conviction and leadership he has shown in America's war on terrorism amidst both the constant and vicious, personal and political attacks both he and his family are made to endure.

WHAT I AM … is a human being, full of numerous faults and failures, but a man nonetheless, who, though not always successful, has continually strived to do "what's right" instead of "what's easy". A man who is challenging the religious leaders of all faiths, to not only preach to their congregations the fundamentals of "what's right" and "what's wrong", but to also then hold them accountable for their actions in both the public and private sectors.

WHAT I AM … is disgusted with the Courts who, on one hand, call the murder of a pregnant woman a "double homicide" but then refer to the abortion of her baby as, "pro-choice".

WHAT I AM … is someone deeply troubled by a political party which embraces a candidate whose primary "leadership" qualities center around his protesting of the Vietnam war and his labeling the honorable men and women who fought in it, (50,000 of whom gave their lives in that action), as rapists, and war criminals. That same political party then stepped forward this year to block the appearance of a true Vietnam war hero, retired Admiral and former United States Senator, Jeremiah Denton, (a man who spent seven years and seven torturous months in a North Vietnam prison), from speaking before an open session of the California legislature as part of that state's 4th of July celebration. The reason Democrats gave for refusing to allow this American hero to speak before their state legislature was because of the "conservative" nature of his views. As an American, that troubles me deeply ….as well it should you.

WHAT I AM … is a man who feels the need to spend, $104, 655.60,(tax paid) of his own money, to purchase this advertisement, in order to set the story straight. Some may say this money would have been better spent feeding the world's poor. At the risk of sounding self-serving, as an American and as a Republican, for the last six decades of my life, I have done exactly that… and more. Following the examples of my parents and grand parents, I have used my earnings to feed the poor, shelter the homeless, provide housing for the elderly and medical care for the sick….. and continue to do so… and I'm not alone in that work.

WHAT I AM … is someone who is paying for this announcement, at my sole expense, in hopes of opening the eyes of those led blindly by ill-informed elements of our great nation, who, through either ignorance, or malicious intent, repeatedly attack and belittle those of us who belong to a political party that holds true to the belief, "… the rights of the governed, exceed the power of the government". For those interested, I am speaking only as a tax-paying individual who is in no way associated with The Republican National Committee, nor with any of its directors, or delegates.

WHAT I AM … is a man who understands, "the American way of life" is a message of self-empowerment for all.

WHAT I AM … is an American who is grateful that our nation gives each of us the opportunity of self-determination and the right to benefit from the fruits of self achievement.

WHAT I AM … is an American who wants to preserve that way of life for all who seek it.

WHAT I AM … is blessed to be an American…. and proud to be Republican.

Some More Details for the 8/28 Double Event

Hello Everybody!

Just wanted to get back to everybody with some more details about the August 28th Double Header Event.

First of all, a quick summary for those of you who delete your emails! :-)

This is a Kosher Singles of Hartford, New Haven, & Springfield event. Our group is for Jewish singles of all ages who want to meet others who keep Kosher.

On Sunday, August 28th, we're going to be spending the day having fun at Six Flags New England, then we'll be adjourning to the Lathrop House Bed & Breakfast for a Kosher dinner. Visit the website at www.koshersingles.org for the full announcement.

People can go to only one event or to both, either or, your choice.

Now for the details:

If I can get fifteen PRE-PAID reservations for Six Flags by August 5th, then the price will be only $23/person... and that price will apply to any additional tickets we need for people who sign up after that date too! If we get fifteen people after that date, the price rises to $26/person. If we don't get fifteen I'll have to run down to the AAA office and get vouchers so we can get in for $27/person.

Obviously the $23 price would be best, especially since it would apply to latecomers too, so please try to get back to me by August 5th.

For the Dinner at the Lathrop House B&B, Diana says she can accommodate at most twenty people, so reserve early! She's made up a full menu of the meal I can send to people who ask for it. The cost is going to be $45/person plus any gratuities. Again, I'm going to ask people to PRE-PAY for this.

Also, I am again going to mention Diana's offer to host those who wish to make a weekend of it at her beautiful Bed & Breakfast. She's certified Kosher by the Springfield Vaad and the house is a short walk from Congregation Kodimah, an Orthodox shul www.kodimoh.org. Contact her directly via her website if this interests you. www.dianamarahenry.com/lathrop

Email me directly at elipongo+ks@gmail.com to get answers to your questions, the full menu, and to discuss payment methods.

Be Well & Be Safe, everyone!

ORTHODOX AT WORK

The Spiritual Challenges of the Workplace

by Rabbi Yitzchok A. Breitowitz

So much of our lives and our energies are wrapped up in our professional and vocational identities. And yet, even the most observant among us often lives a somewhat schizophrenic, fragmented existence. While we meticulously observe the highest standards of Shabbat and kashrut, we conduct our professional lives blithely unaware of, or perhaps even indifferent to, the tremendous and indeed frightening spiritual challenges we face. Our motto seems to be "Man/Woman of the world from 9 to 5; Torah Jew on evenings and weekends." Our greatest leaders, however, were well aware of these pitfalls. The story is told that Rabbi Yisrael Salanter did not want to make a living teaching Torah and decided to try to earn money in the stock market. Eventually, he left that line of work because he felt that the nisyonot (trials) of the marketplace were simply too great. 1 If this was true for such a gaon, what can we possibly say? Nevertheless, since this is the reality that most of us face, it is imperative that we at least be sensitive to the grave dangers of the working world as well as the magnificent opportunities this world presents.

Facing Halachic Challenges

Historically, the primary obstacles encountered by the Orthodox Jew in the workplace were issues related to Shabbat and Yom Tov observance and, to a lesser degree, the availability of kosher food. While these problems have certainly not gone away, it is fair to state that at least in major metropolitan areas, the incidence of these problems has been significantly reduced. 2 Indeed, even wearing a kippah has become socially acceptable. Nevertheless, even today—or perhaps especially today—there are serious halachic issues with which one must continue to struggle. Some are specific to particular professions and cannot be addressed here, 3 others are more generic in nature, applicable to virtually all endeavors.

The Gemara in Bava Batra (165a) tells us that a minority of people commit sins involving arayot (sexual impropriety); most people commit crimes involving gezel (theft); and everybody commits sins involving lashon hara (gossip). At a minimum, in the workplace that exists today, one is confronted with all three sins. Provocative speech, lascivious dress and immodesty are commonplace in many jobs; indeed, the proliferation of sexual harassment claims clearly indicates the dangers that men and women face in the modern workplace.

Without wanting to sound excessively alarmist, I must state that even Orthodox Jews have occasionally succumbed to serious temptations with tragic and devastating consequences to their lives and the lives of their families. Thus, even from a secular psychological perspective, the Torah's tremendous wisdom in erecting appropriate barriers and safeguards between the sexes is readily apparent.

In the corporate world, gezel is something which we must contend with all the time. Not limited to robbing a bank, gezel is taking an employer's time, using office supplies for personal use without permission, making personal phone calls– either long distance or local– or overcharging and inflating time sheets in order to increase the number of billable hours. Geneivat da'at, misrepresentation, where one sells things without necessarily revealing all the defects that may exist, is yet another form of gezel. 4

At times, people may justify such dissembling on the grounds that the customer is a non-Jew. Yet, without even considering the intricacies of taut akum (mistakes made by a Gentile), the awesome sin of chillul Hashem (desecration of God's name) and the possible application of dina demalchuta dina (the law of the land is the law) we should heed the admonition of Rav Yaakov Kaminetsky, zt"l, who cautioned that if one acquires the habit of being a liar and a cheat, this will inevitably spill over into other areas of his life. 5

Needless to say, lashon hara is rampant in the business world, whether it is describing one's business competitors or gossiping around the water cooler. What can one say about competitors when trying to get a share of the business? When is disclosing negative information prohibited and when is it in fact required? The halachot of lashon hara are intricate and complex and require considerable study and review as well as frequent consultation with a posek (halachic authority). 6

Living by these rules is not easy. What if you're the young associate in a law firm whose boss demands that certain things be done: Do you lose your job? Do you lose your standing in the firm? What are you willing to give up? Money? Power? Influence? Advancement? Although not quite as dramatic as Avraham Avinu's willingness to sacrifice Yitzchak, those of us in the working world face mini akeidot (sacrifices) every day. Similar to Avraham, we grow stronger from the challenge if we have the courage to meet it. 7

Maintaining Values on the Job – No Matter What

Wholly apart from these serious halachic infractions mentioned above, the work environment can adversely affect one's values and attitudes. Some individuals relegate their work life to insignificance, where their attitude is "What I do from 9 to 5 is nothing. I live for Shabbat…for my shiur." While at first glance, this may seem to be a praiseworthy attitude since one recognizes that life's primary purpose is avodat Hashem, eventually this kind of thinking can be very destructive. If one thinks that what he does eight to ten hours a day is worthless and not a way of connecting to God, that could easily destroy him from within. How can a person spend so many hours a day in worthless pursuits? Indeed, this kind of thinking can lead to depression, despondency and hopelessness. There is also the opposite problem— that one gets so invested in professionalism as the mark of his importance that he loses his sense of priorities in life. Thus, how we relate to our work involves a very delicate balance. We must place our work lives in proper perspective—our jobs are essentially vehicles to support ourselves and raise Jewish families; means to give tzedakah and strengthen Torah; opportunities for productivity and tikkun olam (improvement of society); and enablers of kiddush Hashem and gemilut chesed. Our jobs are useful, important and significant, but not ends in themselves.

Yet another pernicious problem is simply the lack of time and energy needed to think. All human beings need time to reflect, and bnei and bnot Torah in particular need time to be able to answer questions such as where are their lives going and why. Yet we are on treadmills all the time. We are part of the rat race and we begin to feel like beleague red rats. After all, take the typical lawyer in a major Wall Street law firm who might work 60-65 hours a week. Why isn't such a heavy work schedule slavery? A slavery that asserts its mastery not just over our time but over our hearts, our souls, our concentration and our kochot hanefesh (energies). If, as Thomas Paine remarked, "The price of [political] liberty is eternal vigilance," this is even truer for spiritual liberty and freedom. It is so easy to lose sight of life's ultimate purpose when we are so preoccupied with our daily routine. Indeed, according to a recent survey, the amount of time that husbands and wives spend talking to each other about matters other than housekeeping is less than 20 minutes per week. Look at what the work culture has done to us. In contrast to the prototypical ba'al habayit of the Rambam who earns enough for his daily bread in three hours and can utilize the remaining nine hours of daylight for Torah study, 8 our work seems to have taken over our entire lives. In short, we are slaves; we are slaves both to our work and to the negative emotions that work engenders within us including envy, possessiveness, materialism, arrogance and the like.

Keeping an Eye on the Ultimate Destination

A modern adaptation of a parable by the Dubnow Maggid brings out this point forcefully. The story involves an obsessive-compulsive individual who always had to be fully prepared for whatever life threw his way. When he was making his first trip to Israel, he was told there would be a seven-hour stopover in France. He decided that he would prepare for the trip by learning French so that he would be able to order a Coke in the proper language. He studied hard for an entire year. By the time he got to the airport, he had mastered the language. He was proud of himself and he impressed a lot of people. But seven hours later, when he got back on the plane, he realized with a sickening feeling that he never bothered to learn Hebrew. He was so preoccupied with the stopover that he never gave thought to the ultimate destination. This world is a prozdor, an entry way and a hallway to the World to Come. There are certain skills necessary for navigating the hallway: we have to make a living, learn how to drive, etc. but if we put all of our energies into navigating this world, and never give thought to the ultimate currency we take with us to the Olam Haemet (the World of Truth), we are as misguided and short-sighted as that gentleman. It would do us well to remember that nobody ever leaves this world wishing he had made one more big deal.

But the dangers go beyond the simple inability to think. There is a subtle, and not-so-subtle, reprogramming of thought that occurs as well. Rabbeinu Yonah writes that a major component of how we are judged in the eyes of Hashem is what we truly regard as important 9 in the innermost depths of our hearts, what is it that we really admire?

Very often because of the all-consuming energy we have to put into our work, we do mitzvot perfunctorily. Theoretically, every Shabbat must be a new Shabbat, every tefillah, a renewed conversation with the Creator, every holiday, a unique encounter with the Divine. But drained of our energies and buffeted by competing and inconsistent versions of the "good life," our spiritual selves often atrophy into something arid, mechanical, unfeeling and superficial.

The problem of stagnation is, of course, a general problem in the life of the religious Jew. The prophets identified this as mitzvat anashim melumadah, 10 doing mitzvot habitually. And yet, while this problem is relevant to every Jew and not just the working population, the lack of time, energy and yishuv hada'at (peace of mind) make the working person exceptionally prone to the notion of not growing in avodat Hashem. The Torah compares a person to a tree. Just as a tree grows when it is rooted in the ground and receives adequate sun, water and nutrients, a person can grow spiritually if he receives adequate nourishment for his soul. If our religion doesn't provide us with adequate nourishment, we die within. And this deterioration can happen very slowly. A tree can be dead while all the leaves are still green and intact. Similarly, a person can spiritually die even while appearing vibrant and alive. And there is perhaps no greater tragedy than this.

Making Spirituality Vibrant and Personal

How can we infuse our work days with spirituality? We must keep a life-line to a rebbe, a posek, a yeshivah, a shul and a kehillah. It is important not to be alone, to surround ourselves with friends who have spiritual aspirations and with people who consciously strive to work on themselves spiritually and grow in avodat Hashem. For men, it's important to daven with a minyan three times a day. For men and women, it is especially important to ensure that Shabbat and Yom Tov are seen not just as days of rest (though that has a place too) but as days of sanctity, love and joy, days dedicated to spending time with family, to engaging in fervent and meaningful prayer as well as challenging Torah study. For it is these days above all that can provide the fuel that will continue to warm the heart and inspire the soul throughout the work week.

Virtually every working environment needs the equivalent of a neon sign that says, "Proceed with caution," and yet amidst the risks, there are many positive opportunities for growth. In Hilchot Deot (3:3), the Rambam lays down a very fundamental idea based on the verse in Proverbs (3:6) "Bechal derachecha da'eihu, Know God in all your ways." Da'eihu is derived from the verb da'at, which refers to more than knowing; it implies an intimate sense of being connected. The Rambam explains that if one works with the intention to earn money to serve Hashem, give tzedakah and support one's family, then one's working hours are not just a vehicle for those noble goals but actually constitute avodat Hashem. I would suggest that the same way before one performs a mitzvah, one says "Hineni muchan umezuman, I am readying myself," perhaps every day one should start off with a silent or verbalized tefillah to Hashem, that "what I'm going to do for the next eight hours is with the intention of serving You." If you start off with that orientation, then your entire workday constitutes avodat Hashem.

Furthermore, the workplace can be the very arena in which one is mekadesh Shem Shamayim (sanctifies the name of Heaven). In my own community, we suffered a great tragedy several years ago with the sudden death of an attorney in his thirties. While this young man spent his time in law, he lived a life of genuine kiddush Hashem by virtue of his honesty and the gracious way in which he dealt with all of his colleagues including secretaries, janitors and other "run-of-the mill" people who were not important business associates or clients. He was the type of person that after meeting him you would say, as Chazal say, "Kamah naim derachav, How beautiful are his ways." If that's what a Jew is, a Jew is a good thing. That's the definition of kiddush Hashem: "Veahavata et Hashem Elokecha 11— you make the name of God beloved by the way you live your life."

Tomorrow is another day...

In truth, there are wonderful opportunities for kiddush Hashem that people in the workplace have that others in more cloistered environments do not necessarily have. Everyone of us— whether we are in the workforce or not—has our own avodah. The challenge is not to spend our lives looking at others saying, "why don't I have that," but to see the potential in the place where we are. The Chofetz Chaim used to explain that when Hashem told Moshe at the burning bush, "Take off your shoes because the place where you are standing is holy," He was speaking to all of us—that no matter where we live or what we do, there is the potential for holiness and sanctification. It is incumbent upon us to find it. 12

5. See also the powerful words of Rabbeinu Moshe of Coucy in Sefer Mitzvot Gadol, Mitzvot Aseh74, where he states that Jews who behave as thieves, cheats and liars towards non-Jews prolong the galut and cast aspersions, as it were, on the Ribbono Shel Olam who has chosen such evil-doers as His people.
6. The classic written work on these laws is Sefer Chofetz Chaimand the most popular English adaptation is Rabbi Zelig Pliskin's Guard Your Tongue. The Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation also operates a halachic hotline where people can call to consult with a rav. It should be noted that there may be other prohibitions besides lashon hara in attempting to lure away a competitor's customers. See Choshen Mishpat156 and 237.

8. See Rambam, Hilchot Talmud Torah 1:12. I do not intend to suggest that the Rambam's picture of a ba'al habayit was ever historically accurate— indeed, Rambam's own schedule as court physician in Cairo shows that it was not—but it does represent an idealized picture of productive work being placed in a proper perspective.

BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan, June 30, 2005 – A routine orientation flight turned out to be anything but routine, at least for three Afghan children stranded in the middle of a flooded river near Salerno, Afghanistan, June 29.

It all started as Chief Warrant Officer James Gisclair was giving an orientation flight to a pilot new to the area. He and the new pilot, Chief Warrant Officer Nathan Scott, spotted a flash flood occurring after heavy rains hit the area earlier that day. They noticed a group of people standing alongside the banks of a flooding river, pointing toward the middle as they followed its path.

"As we looked closer we saw three kids stuck on a concrete foundation with the river rushing past them," Gisclair said. "We went back to Salerno, where we asked to go back to rescue the kids. We were approved to go back and get them, and when we got back there, the water had risen to above their feet."

The pilots, flying a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter configured for medical evacuations, couldn't land close enough to pull the stranded kids to safety. They had to rely on a hoist system called a jungle penetrator. The hoist basically is a cable with a seat at the end, and it's lowered or raised with the help of the aircraft's crew chief. To rescue the children, someone had to sit on the end of the hoist while someone else lowered him to the children.

The arduous task fell to Sgt. Tyrone Jordan. As Jordan got ready to be lowered to the now panic-stricken children, Spc. Christopher Zimmerman set the winch in motion, lowering him toward the rapidly moving water.

"They were real scared -- scared and cold. Shivering, in fact," said Jordan. "They didn't want to come to me at first, but when I smiled and held out my hand they came running."

The hoist could only hold three people at a time, so Jordan took the two youngest boys, who he guesses were ages 5 and 8, with him up to the helicopter.

"They were really scared of heights, I think," he said. "One of them panicked and kicked me off the hoist when I put them into the aircraft, but thanks to Zimmerman I was secured to the cable and was able to pull myself back on to it."

Gisclair and Scott flew the helicopter a short distance away to let the two children out before going back for the last one.

"We flew them about three football fields away," Gisclair said. "We set them down in an open backyard and then went back for the last kid."

The crowd of onlookers, which had looked disappointed and even angry when the aircrew flew away after first spotting the children, had now swelled to about 600 people, Gisclair said. The aircrew had no way to tell them they had to go to Salerno Air Base before they could rescue the children, he said. In the end, it didn't matter, and their intent soon was clear enough for all too see.

"They were happy to see us, I could tell," he said. "They were clapping and waving their hands at us when we picked up and set down the first two. The kids were scared, but they were safe."

The third boy, who Jordan guesses was 10, came quickly to the aircraft. "He wasn't scared at all of me or the helicopter, but he was cold and shivering very badly," Jordan said. "The wind near the water was whipping around pretty good, and the water was flowing very fast."

The aircraft's pilots and crew are made up of a hodgepodge of units from across the world. Gislair and Zimmerman are from the 68th Medical Evacuation Company in Hawaii and Alaska, and Scott is from the 159th Medical Evacuation Company from Germany. Jordan also is based out of Germany with the 45th Medical Evacuation Company.

Sunday's Dinner

Hello Everyone!

Sorry for taking  couple of days before getting around to writing this...

Anyways, we had a good dozen or so folks who came to our dinner at Claire's, there were even two ladies who saw me setting up and decided to join our group!

I know that I had an excellent time and I think that everyone else did too, judging from the spirited conversation and the comments I got from everyone afterwards.

The food at Claire's lived up to and even surpassed all the reviews that I found. And by the way, that huge chunk of Chocolate Fudge Cake Cathleen sent me home with was all gone before the dog finished doing his business outside once I got home!

I've already put the pictures up at the website, which is fully functional now. Go and visit. www.koshersingles.org

Hope to see a lot of you at the next event up in Springfield, I have some more details about that one that I'll be sending under seperate cover.

Be Well & Be Safe!

Deadly Tolerance

By Jed Babbin
Published 7/11/2005 12:08:43 AM

Two features dominate our thinking about terrorism at home. We are, first, complacent. Nothing has happened since 9-11, and we have begun to believe that nothing ever will. Grimly tolerant of what passes for security at airports and train stations, we are -- second -- annoyed at the thought that more and different security measures may be needed. The London bombings last Thursday, the Brits' reaction to them, and the revelations of how the problem has been building there are highly instructive. Or will be if we look at the unvarnished facts.

What happened in London last week could happen here today, and will -- in one form or another -- all too soon. We can, and must, do more to control our borders, but the sad fact is that -- like Britain -- the people who are intent on conducting such attacks are here already, and are allowed too much support from too many quarters in America, as well as abroad. Just like those who struck London, and apparently are still at large to strike again.

The Brit reaction was, on one hand, all stiff upper lip and, on the other, unrestrained irresponsibility. Those whose voices count -- such as Tory MP John Redwood and historian Paul Johnson -- were adamant in condemning the terrorists and compassionate in mourning the dead. Johnson, in particular, almost scoffed at the idea that such small attacks were going to change British policy. Those who have to call the TV bookers to get attention, such as former Labourite Tony Benn, were unrestrained in moral equivalence and "give peace a chance" cant. It was too much for even his BBC interviewer. Benn went so far as to equate the people killed in London with those "innocents" we'd killed in Fallujah. Tell it to the Marines, Mr. Benn.

The surprising element in this was Redwood's reflexive hope that there would be no backlash against the Muslim community. Redwood, who is one of the best thinkers on the Tory side, said it almost in passing. His sentiment is rightly placed. But it masks a real problem that we and Britain face. No one should want to oppress any minority. No one -- here or in Britain -- wants to say that all Muslims are responsible for the acts of the terrorists. That's fine, as far as it goes. But we have to go much farther.

It matters not whether the terrorists are Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, or American Indian snake dancers. It is sufficient that they are an identifiable group dedicated to the destruction of our freedom. Religion is a factor in this war only to the extent that it helps us identify and defeat the enemy.

IT'S PROPER TO BE CONCERNED about oppression of minorities, but this concern has so governed British self-defense over the past decade or more that London is now the hottest of terrorist hotbeds in Europe. Tolerance is one hallmark of democracy. But when it is given importance beyond its proper measure, it becomes a recipe for national suicide.

According to a newly leaked Brit intelligence dossier, al Qaeda's recruitment of terrorists is well organized and successful on British campuses. The al-Q recruiters are focused on the affluent Muslims who should be among the best assimilated in British society. But, according to the report, entitled "Young Muslims and Extremism," up to 1% -- some 16,000 British Muslims -- are actively engaged in terrorist activity in Britain and abroad. Couple that with the statement of Lord Stevens, the former London police chief, who said that up to 3,000 British-born or British-based people have passed through bin Laden's terrorist training camps, and you get some idea of how Britain has allowed itself -- by lax immigration policies, political sensitivity, and all the rest in the name of "tolerance" -- to become a terrorist haven.

It's probably not that bad in the United States, but if the al-Q recruiters, the radical imams in mosques and the other terrorist sympathizers here aren't watched and -- when they break the law arrested and imprisoned -- we will have the same problem Britain has. Is this a condemnation of Islam? No. It's only a recognition of reality that should be characteristic of American political speech. Instead, we have the Durbin-Kennedy Deanocrats hammering our soldiers and aiding the enemy.

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the al Qaeda chief in Iraq, sent a thank you note to the Dick Durbins and Ted Kennedys of Congress in a message to his followers and sympathizers on July 5. According to an unreleased translation read to me by a Defense Department source, Zarqawi's message exhorted his terrorists to greater effort, because, Zarqawi said, it is very clear that America was being defeated in Iraq. Zarqawi's proof? His message said that the proof that America is losing is that some American congressmen are saying just that.

IT IS ESSENTIAL TO THE war that our enemy has no reason to doubt our resolve. Winston Churchill knew that. His ringing speeches, throughout the war, and especially in its darkest hours, were literally the fuel that propelled British courage when everyone, including many of his closest advisers, thought all was lost. When Dick Durbin compared our people at Gitmo to Nazis, Gulag guards, and Pol Pot's mass murderers, there was a short burst of outrage, quelled by his phony apology. Senate Republicans never demanded -- or got -- a clear and unequivocal apology from Durbin. By their failure to do so they give credence to Zarqawi's message.

Republicans in the Senate and House are failing in one of their key wartime tasks: to take on the political opposition in the debate. Not to shout people down, but to take them to task. On the floor, we should be hearing one speech after another critical of the irresponsible rhetoric of the left. Why don't we? Because they want comity, to pass laws we don't need, spend money we should save, and give themselves pay raises without voting for them. What they should be doing, instead, is taking on the tough problems they were elected to tackle. Like what do we do about the terrorists who are within our borders, and those who preach violence and hatred to young Muslims here. They should read carefully the newly leaked dossier on recruitment of terrorists in the U.K. And they should not allow those who apologize for terrorists scare them out of it.

We Will Stay in the Fight Until the Fight Is Won

President Bush spoke eloquently Tuesday night about why we are fighting the global war on terrorism and how our efforts in Iraq contribute to our nation's security.

    He said, in part:
"As Iraqis make progress toward a free society, the effects are being felt beyond Iraq's borders. Before our Coalition liberated Iraq, Libya was secretly pursuing nuclear weapons. Today the leader of Libya has given up his chemical and nuclear weapons programs. Across the broader Middle East, people are claiming their freedom. In the last few months, we have witnessed elections in the Palestinian Territories and Lebanon. These elections are inspiring democratic reformers in places like Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Our strategy to defend ourselves and spread freedom is working. The rise of freedom in this vital region will eliminate the conditions that feed radicalism and ideologies of murder - and make our Nation safer.

"We have more work to do, and there will be tough moments that test America's resolve. We are fighting against men with blind hatred - and armed with lethal weapons - who are capable of any atrocity. They wear no uniform; they respect no laws of warfare or morality. They take innocent lives to create chaos for the cameras. They are trying to shake our will in Iraq - just as they tried to shake our will on September 11, 2001. They will fail. The terrorists do not understand America. The American people do not falter under threat - and we will not allow our future to be determined by car bombers and assassins..."

Bush Administration Implements WMD Commission Recommendations

The White House has released a fact sheet on recent steps by the Bush Administration to fight the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. It is now available on our web site.

Sen. Santorum Urges UN Action Against Anti-Semitism

U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, has introduced a bipartisan sense of the Senate resolution urging action against anti-Semitism by United Nations member states and officials.

The resolution cites specific examples of anti-Semitism within the United Nations. False accusations have been made against the Jewish people and the government of Israel at the UN Commission on Human Rights. Israel also continues to be the only UN member denied the opportunity to hold a rotating seat on the Security Council, despite the fact that it has been a member of the organization for 56 years.

The resolution makes it clear that the United States Senate is committed to opposing anti-Semitism and calls on the UN to officially and publicly condemn anti-Semitic statements made at its meetings and to hold accountable member states that make such statements. In addition, it urges the implementation of educational awareness programs about the Holocaust to be implemented around the world to combat anti-Semitism, racism, and religious and ethnic intolerance. The US Ambassador to the UN should also continue working to reduce anti-Semitic and anti-Israel language and resolutions. Likewise, the resolution asks that information on anti-Semitic activities be included in the State Department's annual human rights and religious freedom reports.

A similar resolution sponsored by Representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-18-FL) passed the House of Representatives earlier this month by a vote of 409 to 2.

    Democrats' "Plans" for Social Security

    by Deroy Murdock
    National Review Online
    June 27, 2005

As President Bush has promoted voluntary personal retirement accounts this year, Democrats have offered three positions on this issue, each as appetizing as a bowl of chilled spinach:

The first and most popular Democratic plan could be dubbed: "Don't do something. Just stand there."

...The second Democratic approach resembles a Freudian slip from Senator Jon Corzine (D., N. J.). Let's call it: "Damn the dollar. Full speed ahead!"

... The third Democratic position, call it "Pay Till It Hurts," comes from Rep. Robert Wexler (D., Fla.). He deserves applause for ignoring his party elders and introducing an actual reform blueprint... Too bad his plan is a tax hike...

So, what Democrats recommend on Social Security is zippo, a debauched dollar, or a huge tax hike. By comparison, President Bush's voluntary personal retirement accounts look sexier by the day.

Count Every Vote Act - Recipe for Electoral Chaos

    by Peter Kirsanow
    National Review Online
    June 29, 2005

[The Count Every Vote Act] is an uncommonly mischievous piece of proposed legislation. As National Review's Byron York has noted, shortly after CEVA's introduction, its loose voter-eligibility standards are a recipe for electoral chaos...a review of CEVA's major features plainly shows that passage of the legislation will produce widespread voting inaccuracies and rampant irregularities that guarantee a proliferation of vote recounts and court challenges..

CEVA ...would allow illegal aliens, persons under 18 and those using the names of the deceased to easily register by mail.

...CEVA permits a person to show up at a polling place on Election Day, register on the spot and cast a vote. CEVA requires the vote to be counted like any other.

Again, an individual (or busloads of individuals) with a bit of extra time could appear at multiple polling places, register at each and cast a series of votes in the same election.

...Under [current law], provisional ballots may be cast by voters who don't have an I.D., whose names don't appear on the registry for the polling place, or who are recorded as having requested an absentee ballot. The ballots are held "provisionally" until such time as the voter's eligibility to vote is verified.

CEVA [says] a provisional ballot will be counted regardless of the location at which it's cast and regardless of whether I.D. has been presented to the election official at such location. A person may, therefore, go to several polling places and cast provisional ballots at each despite the fact that the person's name doesn't appear on that precinct's list of registered voters. The person needn't provide a license number, Social Security number, utility bill, bank statement, or any other form of I.D. - and his vote will be counted...

Voter Fraud Case in East St. Louis Ends in Convictions

In other news related to voter fraud, convictions were handed down this week against five men in East St. Louis, IL. They had paid voters up to $10 a vote to vote for Democratic candidates during the Nov. 2 general election.

This case is a victory against political corruption and we hope similar cases in other jurisdictions will be prosecuted as well.

"We Will Stay in the Fight Until the Fight Is Won"

    The White House
    Wednesday, June 29, 2005
EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the text, as released by the White House, of the primetime Iraq address delivered by President George W. Bush at Fort Bragg (N.C.) on Tuesday night, June 28, 2005. [Emphasis added]

Thank you and good evening. I am pleased to visit Fort Bragg — "Home of the Airborne and Special Operations Forces." It is an honor to speak before you tonight. My greatest responsibility as President is to protect the American people, and that is your calling as well. I thank you for your service, your courage and your sacrifice. I thank your families, who support you in your vital work. The soldiers and families of Fort Bragg have contributed mightily to our efforts to secure our country and promote peace. America is grateful — and so is your Commander-in-Chief.

The troops here and across the world are fighting a global war on terror. This war reached our shores on September 11, 2001. The terrorists who attacked us — and the terrorists we face — murder in the name of a totalitarian ideology that hates freedom, rejects tolerance, and despises all dissent. Their aim is to remake the Middle East in their own grim image of tyranny and oppression — by toppling governments, driving us out of the region, and exporting terror.

To achieve these aims, they have continued to kill — in Madrid, Istanbul, Jakarta, Casablanca, Riyadh, Bali, and elsewhere. The terrorists believe that free societies are essentially corrupt and decadent, and with a few hard blows they can force us to retreat. They are mistaken. After September 11, I made a commitment to the American people: This Nation will not wait to be attacked again. We will take the fight to the enemy. We will defend our freedom.

Iraq is the latest battlefield in this war. Many terrorists who kill innocent men, women, and children on the streets of Baghdad are followers of the same murderous ideology that took the lives of our citizens in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania. There is only one course of action against them: to defeat them abroad before they attack us at home. The commander in charge of Coalition operations in Iraq — who is also senior commander at this base — General John Vines, put it well the other day. He said: "We either deal with terrorism and this extremism abroad, or we deal with it when it comes to us."

Our mission in Iraq is clear. We are hunting down the terrorists. We are helping Iraqis build a free nation that is an ally in the war on terror. We are advancing freedom in the broader Middle East. We are removing a source of violence and instability — and laying the foundation of peace for our children and our grandchildren.

The work in Iraq is difficult and dangerous. Like most Americans, I see the images of violence and bloodshed. Every picture is horrifying — and the suffering is real. Amid all this violence, I know Americans ask the question: Is the sacrifice worth it? It is worth it, and it is vital to the future security of our country. And tonight I will explain the reasons why.

Some of the violence you see in Iraq is being carried out by ruthless killers who are converging on Iraq to fight the advance of peace and freedom. Our military reports that we have killed or captured hundreds of foreign fighters in Iraq who have come from Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iran, Egypt, Sudan, Yemen, Libya and other nations. They are making common cause with criminal elements, Iraqi insurgents, and remnants of Saddam Hussein's regime who want to restore the old order. They fight because they know that the survival of their hateful ideology is at stake. They know that as freedom takes root in Iraq, it will inspire millions across the Middle East to claim their liberty as well. And when the Middle East grows in democracy, prosperity, and hope, the terrorists will lose their sponsors, lose their recruits, and lose their hopes for turning that region into a base for attacks on America and our allies around the world.

Some wonder whether Iraq is a central front in the war on terror. Among the terrorists, there is no debate. Hear the words of Osama Bin Laden: "This Third World War … is raging" in Iraq. "The whole world is watching this war." He says it will end in "victory and glory or misery and humiliation."

The terrorists know that the outcome will leave them emboldened, or defeated. So, they are waging a campaign of murder and destruction. And there is no limit to the innocent lives they are willing to take.

We see the nature of the enemy in terrorists who exploded car bombs along a busy shopping street in Baghdad — including one outside a mosque. We see the nature of the enemy in terrorists who sent a suicide bomber to a teaching hospital in Mosul. And we see the nature of the enemy in terrorists who behead civilian hostages and broadcast their atrocities for the world to see.

These are savage acts of violence — but they have not brought the terrorists any closer to achieving their strategic objectives. The terrorists — both foreign and Iraqi — failed to stop the transfer of sovereignty. They failed to break our Coalition and force a mass withdrawal by our allies. They failed to incite an Iraqi civil war. They failed to prevent free elections. They failed to stop the formation of a democratic Iraqi government that represents all of Iraq's diverse population. And they failed to stop Iraqis from signing up in large numbers with the police forces and the army to defend their new democracy.

The lesson of this experience is clear: The terrorists can kill the innocent — but they cannot stop the advance of freedom. The only way our enemies can succeed is if we forget the lessons of September 11 … if we abandon the Iraqi people to men like Zarqawi … and if we yield the future of the Middle East to men like Bin Laden. For the sake of our Nation's security, this will not happen on my watch.

A little over a year ago, I spoke to the Nation and described our Coalition's goal in Iraq. I said that America's mission in Iraq is to defeat an enemy and give strength to a friend — a free, representative government that is an ally in the war on terror, and a beacon of hope in a part of the world that is desperate for reform. I outlined the steps we would take to achieve this goal: We would hand authority over to a sovereign Iraqi government … we would help Iraqis hold free elections by January 2005 … we would continue helping Iraqis rebuild their nation's infrastructure and economy … we would encourage more international support for Iraq's democratic transition … and we would enable Iraqis to take increasing responsibility for their own security and stability.

In the past year, we have made significant progress:

One year ago today, we restored sovereignty to the Iraqi people.

In January 2005, more than eight million Iraqi men and women voted in elections that were free and fair — and took place on time.

We continued our efforts to help them rebuild their country. Rebuilding a country after three decades of tyranny is hard — and rebuilding while at war is even harder. Our progress has been uneven — but progress is being made. We are improving roads, and schools, and health clinics … and working to improve basic services like sanitation, electricity, and water. And together with our allies, we will help the new Iraqi government deliver a better life for its citizens.

In the past year, the international community has stepped forward with vital assistance. Some thirty nations have troops in Iraq, and many others are contributing non-military assistance. The United Nations is in Iraq to help Iraqis write a constitution and conduct their next elections. Thus far, some 40 countries and three international organizations have pledged about 34 billion dollars in assistance for Iraqi reconstruction. More than 80 countries and international organizations recently came together in Brussels to coordinate their efforts to help Iraqis provide for their security and rebuild their country. And next month, donor countries will meet in Jordan to support Iraqi reconstruction. Whatever our differences in the past, the world understands that success in Iraq is critical to the security of all our nations. As German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said at the White House yesterday, "There can be no question a stable and democratic Iraq is in the vested interest of not just Germany, but also Europe."

Finally, we have continued our efforts to equip and train Iraqi Security Forces. We have made gains in both the number and quality of those forces. Today Iraq has more than 160,000 security forces trained and equipped for a variety of missions. Iraqi forces have fought bravely — helping to capture terrorists and insurgents in Najaf, Samarra, Fallujah, and Mosul. And in the past month, Iraqi forces have led a major anti-terrorist campaign in Baghdad called Operation Lightning — which has led to the capture of hundreds of suspected insurgents. Like free people everywhere, Iraqis want to be defended by their own countrymen — and we are helping Iraqis assume those duties.

The progress in the past year has been significant — and we have a clear path forward. To complete the mission, we will continue to hunt down the terrorists and insurgents. To complete the mission, we will prevent al-Qaida and other foreign terrorists from turning Iraq into what Afghanistan was under the Taliban — a safe haven from which they could launch attacks on America and our friends. And the best way to complete the mission is to help Iraqis build a free nation that can govern itself, sustain itself, and defend itself.

So our strategy going forward has both a military track and a political track.

The principal task of our military is to find and defeat the terrorists — and that is why we are on the offense. And as we pursue the terrorists, our military is helping to train Iraqi Security Forces so that they can defend their people and fight the enemy on their own. Our strategy can be summed up this way: As the Iraqis stand up, we will stand down.

We have made progress — but we have a lot more work to do. Today Iraqi Security Forces are at different levels of readiness. Some are capable of taking on the terrorists and insurgents by themselves. A larger number can plan and execute anti-terrorist operations with Coalition support. The rest are forming and not yet ready to participate fully in security operations. Our task is to make the Iraqi units fully capable and independent. We are building up Iraqi Security Forces as quickly as possible, so they can assume the lead in defeating the terrorists and insurgents.

Our Coalition is devoting considerable resources and manpower to this critical task. Thousands of Coalition troops are involved in the training and equipping of Iraqi Security Forces. NATO is establishing a military academy near Baghdad to train the next generation of Iraqi military leaders — and 17 nations are contributing troops to the NATO training mission. Iraqi Army and Police are being trained by personnel from Italy, Germany, Ukraine, Turkey, Poland, Romania, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Today dozens of nations are working toward a common objective: an Iraq that can defend itself, defeat its enemies, and secure its freedom.

To further prepare Iraqi forces to fight the enemy on their own, we are taking three new steps:

First, we are partnering Coalition units with Iraqi units. These Coalition-Iraqi teams are conducting operations together in the field. These combined operations are giving Iraqis a chance to experience how the most professional armed forces in the world operate in combat.

Second, we are embedding Coalition "Transition Teams" inside Iraqi units. These teams are made up of Coalition officers and non-commissioned officers who live, work, and fight together with their Iraqi comrades. Under U.S. command, they are providing battlefield advice and assistance to Iraqi forces during combat operations. Between battles, they are assisting the Iraqis with important skills — such as urban combat, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance techniques.

Third, we are working with the Iraqi Ministries of Interior and Defense to improve their capabilities to coordinate anti-terrorist operations. We are helping them develop command and control structures. We are also providing them with civilian and military leadership training, so Iraq's new leaders can more effectively manage their forces in the fight against terror.

The new Iraqi Security Forces are proving their courage every day. More than 2,000 members of the Iraqi Security Forces have given their lives in the line of duty. Thousands more have stepped forward, and are now in training to serve their nation. With each engagement, Iraqi soldiers grow more battle-hardened, and their officers grow more experienced. We have learned that Iraqis are courageous and that they need additional skills. That is why a major part of our mission is to train them so they can do the fighting and our troops can come home.

I recognize that Americans want our troops to come home as quickly as possible. So do I. Some contend that we should set a deadline for withdrawing U.S. forces. Let me explain why that would be a serious mistake. Setting an artificial timetable would send the wrong message to the Iraqis — who need to know that America will not leave before the job is done. It would send the wrong message to our troops — who need to know that we are serious about completing the mission they are risking their lives to achieve. And it would send the wrong message to the enemy — who would know that all they have to do is to wait us out. We will stay in Iraq as long as we are needed — and not a day longer.

Some Americans ask me, if completing the mission is so important, why don't you send more troops? If our commanders on the ground say we need more troops, I will send them. But our commanders tell me they have the number of troops they need to do their job. Sending more Americans would undermine our strategy of encouraging Iraqis to take the lead in this fight. And sending more Americans would suggest that we intend to stay forever — when we are in fact working for the day when Iraq can defend itself and we can leave. As we determine the right force level, our troops can know that I will continue to be guided by the advice that matters — the sober judgment of our military leaders.

The other critical element of our strategy is to help ensure that the hopes Iraqis expressed at the polls in January are translated into a secure democracy. The Iraqi people are emerging from decades of tyranny and oppression. Under the regime of Saddam Hussein, the Shia and Kurds were brutally oppressed — and the vast majority of Sunni Arabs were also denied their basic rights while senior regime officials enjoyed the privileges of unchecked power. The challenge facing Iraqis today is to put this past behind them, and come together to build a new Iraq that includes all its people.

They are doing that by building the institutions of a free society — a society based on freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of religion, and equal justice under law. The Iraqis have held free elections and established a Transitional National Assembly. The next step is to write a good constitution that enshrines these freedoms in permanent law. The Assembly plans to expand its constitutional drafting committee to include more Sunni Arabs. Many Sunnis who opposed the January elections are now taking part in the democratic process — and that is essential to Iraq's future.

After a constitution is written, the Iraqi people will have a chance to vote on it. If approved, Iraqis will go to the polls again, to elect a new government under their new, permanent constitution. By taking these critical steps and meeting their deadlines, Iraqis will bind their multiethnic society together in a democracy that respects the will of the majority and protects minority rights.

As Iraqis grow confident that the democratic progress they are making is real and permanent, more will join the political process. And as Iraqis see that their military can protect them, more will step forward with vital intelligence to help defeat the enemies of a free Iraq. The combination of political and military reform will lay a solid foundation for a free and stable Iraq.

As Iraqis make progress toward a free society, the effects are being felt beyond Iraq's borders. The rise of freedom in this vital region will eliminate the conditions that feed radicalism and ideologies of murder — and make our Nation safer.

We have more work to do, and there will be tough moments that test America's resolve. We are fighting against men with blind hatred — and armed with lethal weapons — who are capable of any atrocity. They wear no uniform; they respect no laws of warfare or morality. They take innocent lives to create chaos for the cameras. They are trying to shake our will in Iraq — just as they tried to shake our will on September 11, 2001. They will fail. The terrorists do not understand America. The American people do not falter under threat — and we will not allow our future to be determined by car bombers and assassins.

America and our friends are in a conflict that demands much of us. It demands the courage of our fighting men and women … it demands the steadfastness of our allies … and it demands the perseverance of our citizens. We accept these burdens — because we know what is at stake. We fight today, because Iraq now carries the hope of freedom in a vital region of the world — and the rise of democracy will be the ultimate triumph over radicalism and terror. And we fight today because terrorists want to attack our country and kill our citizens — and Iraq is where they are making their stand. So we will fight them there … we will fight them across the world — and we will stay in the fight until the fight is won.

America has done difficult work before. From our desperate fight for independence, to the darkest days of a Civil War, to the hard-fought battles against tyranny in the 20th Century, there were many chances to lose our heart, our nerve, or our way. But Americans have always held firm, because we have always believed in certain truths. We know that if evil is not confronted, it gains in strength and audacity, and returns to strike us again. We know that when the work is hard, the proper response is not retreat, it is courage. And we know that this great ideal of human freedom is entrusted to us in a special way — and that the ideal of liberty is worth defending.

In this time of testing, our troops can know: The American people are behind you. Next week, our Nation has an opportunity to make sure that support is felt by every soldier, sailor, airman, coast guardsman, and Marine at every outpost across the world. This Fourth of July, I ask you to find a way to thank the men and women defending our freedom — by flying the flag … sending letters to our troops in the field … or helping the military family down the street. The Department of Defense has set up a website — AmericaSupportsYou.mil. You can go there to learn about private efforts in your own community. At this time when we celebrate our freedom, let us stand with the men and women who defend us all.

To the soldiers in this hall, and our servicemen and women across the globe: I thank you for your courage under fire and your service to our Nation. I thank our military families — the burden of war falls especially hard on you. In this war, we have lost good men and women who left our shores to defend freedom — and did not live to make the journey home. I have met with families grieving the loss of loved ones who were taken from us too soon. I have been inspired by their strength in the face of such great loss. We pray for the families. And the best way to honor the lives that have been given in this struggle is to complete the mission.

I thank those of you who have re-enlisted in an hour when your country needs you. And to those watching tonight who are considering a military career, there is no higher calling than service in our Armed Forces. We live in freedom because every generation has produced patriots willing to serve a cause greater than themselves. Those who serve today are taking their rightful place among the greatest generations that have worn our Nation's uniform. When the history of this period is written, the liberation of Afghanistan and the liberation of Iraq will be remembered as great turning points in the story of freedom.

After September 11, 2001, I told the American people that the road ahead would be difficult — and that we would prevail. Well, it has been difficult. And we are prevailing. Our enemies are brutal — but they are no match for the United States of America — and they are no match for the men and women of the United States military.

Thank you. And may God bless America.

    FEC Debates Blog Rules

    Wednesday, June 29, 2005

WASHINGTON — The Federal Election Commission says Web logs just might be a threat to democracy and it's considering whether to police them.

The issue, being discussed during FEC hearings on Tuesday and Wednesday, is whether some Web sites actually provide unregulated benefits to specific political campaigns. The famously free-spirited Web community is fighting back.

Click in the box to the right of the story to watch a report by FOX News' Major Garrett.

Markos Moulitsas Zuniga, author of Daily Kos Web Log, or blog, one of the nation's most heavily read political Web sites, says he wants Washington to back off.

"Any regulation presents a potential chilling effect on a medium that is truly the first democratic mass medium in the history of the world," Zuniga said.

Political Web sites like Daily Kos and Wonkette, to name two, have become influential political players by shaping voter perceptions and media coverage. Some also advertise products that benefit a political figure, party or point of view.

"Right now, it is largely a self-regulating community. It is also a pretty small community when you look at the number of people in America versus the number of bloggers. It is a pretty minute proportion," said Wonkette author Ana Marie Cox.

Web sites as political actors became an issue in Republican Sen. John Thune's (search) upset victory over then-Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle. Thune disclosed after the election that he paid two bloggers $35,000 to support Thune and attack coverage of the race by South Dakota's largest newspaper, the Sioux Falls Argus Leader.

"I do think the other thing that the Thune-bloggers-for-pay, blogolla let's call it, scandal probably did was make people much more weary," Cox said.

It also raised new fears that organizations seeking to lobby Congress or curry favor with politicians could use the Web to circumvent campaign finance laws.

"You don't want to force every blogger to go out and get a lawyer. At the same time, you don't want the Internet to become an avenue by which corporations, labor unions, wealthy individuals can pour a lot of money into political campaigns," said Larry Noble, executive director of the Center for Responsive Politics.

Historically, the FEC has left the Internet alone, but it is under a federal court order to apply some campaign finance rules to cyberspace. Commissioner Ellen Weintraub ( search) said she favors more disclosure of Web site funding sources, but not much more.

"The commission generally is not terribly interested in anything other than a very limited rulemaking in this regard because it is a new technology, because it's still evolving," Weintraub said.

TV networks can broadcast and newspapers can publish hard-charging political editorials without violating campaign finance laws under a journalist exemption. Bloggers want to be included in the exemption, leaving the FEC to decide whether bloggers are journalists

    BAD NEWS FROM LONDON

    Dear HonestReporting Subscriber,

Two days after the terrorist bombings in London, British Prime Minister Blair gave a high-profile interview on BBC Radio, which Associated Press covered in this manner:

Prime Minister Tony Blair said Britain must defend against terrorism D but must also strive to understand the underlying causes of the violence, which he identified as deprivation, lack of democracy and ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

"I think this type of terrorism has very deep roots," Blair said. "As well as dealing with the consequences of this D trying to protect ourselves as much as any civil society can D you have to try to pull it up by its roots."

That meant boosting understanding between people of different religions, helping people in the Middle East see a path to democracy and easing the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, he said. (emphasis added)

Blair's apparent linking of Israel with the London attacks set off a firestorm, angering Israeli leaders while pleasing Palestinians. An editorial from Israel's largest paper, Yediot Ahronot, responded 'With all due respect, the British Prime Minister is wrong,' while Palestinian spokesman Saeb Arekat quipped that Blair had 'touched reality and spoke strategically of the need to deal with the problems of this region.'

But HonestReporting subscriber Joy Wolfe in Manchester and other media monitors who had listened carefully to Blair's BBC interview noticed something strange D in the interview ( available here), Blair never actually mentioned the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. What did Blair say? That 'some of the critical issues in the Middle East' need to be 'dealt with and sorted out'. AP editorialized Blair's vague statement to mean the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

After receiving a complaint from this HR subscriber, Associated Press issued an official correction:

In a July 9 story about Prime Minister Tony Blair's comments on overcoming global terrorism, The Associated Press erroneously reported that he spoke of easing the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. Blair did not specifically mention the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in his interview with the British Broadcasting Corp.

Kudos to Joy on eliciting the correction, but two questions remain: At what point in the editorial chain did AP filter Blair's words, artificially introducing Israel as one of Blair's 'root sources' of Islamist terror? And what is being done at AP D the world's largest wire agency D to rectify this apparent anti-Israel bias, and the misrepresentation of UK policy?

    Comments to AP: feedback@ap.org

     OMITTING ANTI-ISRAEL TERROR

In the wake of the attacks, The (UK) Sun published a roundup of Islamic terrorism 'across the world over the last decade' D complete with map. Guess which Mideast country that has absorbed hundreds of Islamist attacks during this period does not appear in the Sun's account?

It seems that editors at The Sun don't consider the nearly 1000 Israeli civilian victims of Islamic terror worthy of mention as any one of the 'worst atrocities' for the past 12 years.

    Comments to: talkback@the-sun.co.uk, letters@the-sun.co.uk

    BBC'S T-WORD PROBLEM

BBC's website began describing Thursday's London attacks as 'terrorism' in bold headlines, but editors then changed their minds on the term, stripping it from all unattributed contexts.

Bloggers Harry's Place and Meryl Yourish caught BBC's quick switcheroo.

BBC thereby avoided the hypocrisy of referring only to attacks on British soil as terrorism. But HonestReporting suggests a far better editorial correction D the time has come for major news outlets to begin calling all Islamic terrorism directed against civilian populations by its name.

Thank you for your ongoing involvement in the battle against media bias.

    Shuttle Set to Soar Again

    Wired News

By Amit Asaravala   |   Also by this reporter

    02:00 AM Jul. 08, 2005 PT

The official countdown for the launch of space shuttle Discovery won't begin until Sunday, but NASA says it's ready to get the American space shuttle program back in action.

"Right now, things look very good," said Kennedy Space Center spokesman George Diller on Wednesday. "We don't have any concerns that I'm aware of."

    More shuttle coverage

A hurricane brewing south of Florida was not likely to pose a problem for the launch, currently scheduled for July 13, said Diller.

"So far it's not a concern," he said. "All we're doing is just watching it."

If all goes as planned, Discovery will rocket into the Florida sky shortly after 12:51 p.m. PDT Wednesday. It will be the first shuttle mission since February 2003, when the shuttle Columbia exploded on its way back to Earth.

The Columbia accident killed all seven astronauts on board and forced NASA to ground the three remaining shuttles in its fleet. Since then, the shuttles and the U.S. space program have both undergone major overhauls.

The remaining shuttles -- Atlantis, Discovery and Endeavour -- now feature new external fuel tanks designed to limit falling debris, like the 1.6-pound chunk that damaged Columbia's wing on launch and doomed its crew.

Sensors on the wings' leading edges will alert astronauts if anything strikes them, while a new digital camera under the shuttle will let mission controllers keep an eye on the external tank as it falls away from the shuttle after launch.

Meanwhile, President Bush has announced a new vision for NASA, which focuses on increasing U.S. involvement in space, mainly by returning humans to the moon and sending them onward to Mars. The shuttles will be used to complete the construction of the International Space Station and then be replaced with new spacecraft, according to the plan.

A new NASA chief, Michael Griffin, will lead the charge.

"It is not in my view (an option) for the United States to consider itself other than the world's leader in space," Griffin told reporters recently. But leadership isn't possible "when we can't fly our own astronauts on our own vehicle," he added.

To that end, the successful launch of Discovery on Wednesday -- and a successful mission over the following 12 days -- is critical to NASA.

The mission itself is modest: Seven astronauts will deliver supplies to the International Space Station and test new safety procedures. However, several new maneuvers and a trio of spacewalks are sure to keep the crew and mission controllers busy.

The first maneuver is scheduled for day two of the mission, when the crew is to attach a new 50-foot extension to the shuttle's robotic arm. The crew will use a camera and laser mounted at the end of the arm to survey the shuttle's wings and nose for any damage that might have been caused during launch.

On day three, Cmdr. Eileen Collins will move the shuttle into position under the International Space Station before initiating a never-before-tried back-flip. The roll will expose the heat-resistant tiles on the shuttle's underbelly to the two astronauts already on board the station, who will photograph the tiles with digital cameras. Mission controllers on the ground will then use the photographs to inspect for tile damage.

Spacewalks on days five, seven and nine will give astronauts a chance to test new tile-repair techniques, replace a gyroscope on the space station and install a storage platform on the side of the station.

Should anything go wrong up to this point, the astronauts have the option of staying at the space station until NASA can send another shuttle to retrieve them. Otherwise, the astronauts will say their goodbyes to the station crew on day 11 and land at the Kennedy Space Center two days later.

If the mission is successful, it will serve as a green light for NASA. The agency could resume using the shuttle to ferry components to the International Space Station later this year. It may also consider sending astronauts to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. With these tasks completed, the agency can then focus on returning humans to the moon.

But if the mission fails, especially if it fails tragically, NASA could again find itself in a tailspin. And it's unclear whether it would be able to recover this time.

It's a risk that NASA and the United States must take, according to Griffin.

At his nomination hearing before the Senate Commerce Committee in April, Griffin recounted how Spain's backing of Columbus' voyage to the New World in 1492 helped the country rise to a position of power at the time. The United States is now at a similar turning point in its history, he said.

"In the 21st century and beyond, for America to continue to be pre-eminent among nations, it is necessary for us also to be the pre-eminent spacefaring nation," said Griffin. "Or are we willing to accept the world of a generation or two hence where other nations will be engaged in the development of the solar system, and we are not? If not, then it is time to recognize that we have squandered a once-insurmountable lead in the arts and sciences of spaceflight."

    THE DISPOSSESSION MYTH

    Dear HonestReporting Subscriber,

The team at HonestReporting Canada has been on the scene for the past week, dealing with an important media indiscretion. Background for this story was recounted in The Jerusalem Post, in an article reprinted here in full:

Readers of Toronto's Globe and Mail, Canada's newspaper of record, got a different version than the rest of the world of this week's summit meeting between Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.

According to Globe and Mail reporter Carolyn Wheeler, the meeting took place in "Mr. Sharon's flag-draped residence in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City," on "disputed home turf."

    The Prime Minister's official
     residence in Rehavia

In fact, the meeting was held at the prime minister's residence in the Rehavia neighborhood of the capital, where there is no dispute over sovereignty.

Wheeler then waxed for two paragraphs about the alleged site of the meeting: "Mr. Sharon's purchase of the stately Old City stone home in 1987, and the subsequent removal of its Arab tenants, created great controversy at the time. The building is now rarely used, but it is still under heavy guard and remains a stinging symbol for Palestinians struggling to hold onto Arab neighborhoods in East Jerusalem."

After outraged readers pointed out the error, the Globe and Mail issued a correction. "Obviously, it's a very embarrassing error," said Guy Nicholson, the newspaper's interim foreign editor. "We asked her for some background about where the story location was. Unfortunately, she was not actually at the scene of it. She wrote it off of television and wires."

Dov Smith, executive director of HonestReporting Canada, which tracks Canadian media for anti-Israel bias, questioned how the reporter was able to describe participants in the meeting as "grim-faced" D a phrase that appeared in the article D if she wasn't actually there.

"We believe Carolyn Wheeler's reporting is inconsistent with the standards that the Globe and Mail wishes to maintain," Smith said.

Wheeler, a freelancer who is married to Mark MacKinnon, the Globe and Mail's full-time Israel correspondent, recently moved to Israel with her husband. Nicholson said the paper is "generally very trusting with her and pleased with her work."

"This was a very tangential element of the story," Nicholson said, pointing out that the error was limited to two paragraphs "very, very deep in the piece." In fact, the error also appears in the second sentence of the story, which was 16 paragraphs long.

"This is such a closely watched issue that it's getting a little bit blown out of proportion, to be frank," Nicholson said. "I certainly understand the nature of why this was wrong, but we did immediately correct the error and she was mortified at having made the mistake."

    Sharon's Old City home -
    previous Arab tenants were compensated
with $10,000 to end their lease

This episode brings up one of the most widespread myths promulgated by media coverage of the Mideast conflict D the claim of Palestinian 'dispossession' of land and property at the hands of 'usurping' Israelis.

For example, the entire disputed territory of the West Bank is often referred to in media reports as 'Palestinian lands' D a term that implies all Israeli presence in that region is illegitimate (see HR critiques of this practice here, here and here). In fact, nearly all Israeli construction in the West Bank took place in non-developed areas that, if previously owned by Arabs, were purchased at significant cost by current Israeli landowners.

In some cases, the dispossession myth extends even to pre-1967 Israel. A Palestinian spokesman describes Israel's birth in this manner:

There is nothing like it in modern history. A foreign minority attacking the national majority in its own homeland, expelling virtually all of its population, obliterating its physical and cultural landmarks, planning and supporting this unholy enterprise from abroad...

This type of deliberate distortion of Zionist and early Israeli history underlies nearly all attacks on the fundamental legitimacy of the Jewish state. In fact, as meticulously documented by Aryeh Avneri in his book Claim of Dispossession: Jewish Land Settlement and the Arabs, 1878-1948:

    1)  The vast majority of Arabs who left the region during this period did so on their own accord,

    2)  A large proportion of the population that would come to be known as 'Palestinians' were actually new immigrants to the region during this period, and

    3)  Jewish immigrants during this period bought huge swaths of land from well-known Arab owners, at high cost, and in official sales.

Yet the myth persists, as Ron Padalny noted in a June 27 National Post column:

The image of Palestinians being thrown out of their homes by the Israelis presents a particular obsession for much of Western media. False stories, such as Edward Said's claim that he grew up in Jerusalem and was made a refugee, have been amplified by the media. (It was later discovered that the late Columbia University professor spent most of his youth in Cairo and his parents did not even own a house in Jerusalem.) Similarly, claims of Yasser Arafat's Palestinian birth were for years accepted by the media at face value, despite ample evidence he was born in Egypt.

HonestReporting encourages subscribers to be on the lookout for rehashing of the 'dispossession myth' in your local media coverage.
