Why we forward jokes

(This explains why we forward jokes.)

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight.

When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.

When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"

"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered.

"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked.

"Of course, sir; come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up."

The man gestured, and the gate began to open.

"Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked.

"I'm sorry sir, but we don't accept pets."

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog

After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence.

As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.

"Excuse me!" he called to the man. "Do you have any water?"

"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in."

"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog.

"There should be a bowl by the pump."

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.

The traveler filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, and then he gave some to the dog.

When they were full, he and the dog waked back toward the man who was standing by the tree.

"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.

"This is Heaven," he answered.

"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road said that was Heaven, too."

"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope, that's Hell."

"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"

"No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind."

Soooo...

Sometimes, we wonder why friends keep forwarding jokes to us without writing a word.

Maybe this will explain.

When you are very busy, but still want to keep in touch, guess what you do? You forward a joke.

When you have nothing to say, but still want to keep contact, you forward jokes.

When you have something to say, but don't know what, and don't know how, you forward jokes.

Also to let you know that you are still remembered, you are still important, you are still loved, you are still cared for, guess what you get?

A forwarded joke.

So, next time if you get a joke, don't think that you've been sent just another forwarded joke, but that you've been thought of today and your friend on the other end of your computer wanted to send you a smile.

You are all welcome @ my water bowl anytime

Under the Media Radar

Visit HonestReporting's newly redesigned weblog D Media BackSpin D for daily updates on the Mideast and the media.

Communique: 4 August 2005               [View this article online]
                                                                                                                                          [Discuss this topic on BackSpin]

UNDER THE MEDIA RADAR

Dear HonestReporting Subscriber,

Recent media coverage of the Mideast conflict has focused almost entirely on internal Israeli tension as Israel's 'disengagement' from Gaza approaches. It's broadly recognized, though, that Israel's sacrifice of its Gaza communities will only foster peace if accompanied by deep cultural reform on the other side D including Palestinian education for coexistence, and a free, moderate Palestinian press.

Yet important developments in those areas routinely slip under the western media radar:

The official Palestinian Authority newspaper continues to glorify terrorists, flouting the PA's obligation under the road map for 'all official Palestinian institutions [to] end incitement against Israel.' These two men recently murdered an Israeli couple visiting Gaza, yet the official PA paper described them as Shahids D 'holy martyrs':

All Palestinian journalists, moreover, have been banned from covering internal Palestinian conflict or the PA security forces (violators face 'personal and legal consequences of their deeds'), and urged to celebrate Israel's Gaza 'retreat'. This clearly fails the all-important 'town square test' recently endorsed by Condoleeza Rice, citing Natan Sharansky:

if a person cannot walk into the middle of the town square and express his or her views without fear of arrest, imprisonment, or physical harm, then that person is living in a fear society, not a free society. And we cannot rest until every person living in a fear society has finally won their freedom.

Meanwhile, a San Francisco Chronicle reporter visited a Hamas summer camp , where he found this disturbing scene:

"In this camp we learn the important things of life D good behavior, respect," said Osama, who was spending the summer at a Hamas-run camp on the beach outside Gaza City. They also learn how to sing "intifada songs," including one urging them to "kill Zionists wherever they are, in the name of God."
Here's a sample camp activity:
HamascampAt one beach camp, attended by approximately 100 kids, an instructor wore a heavy flannel shirt under which a webbed belt could be seen strapped to his stomach. Asked by a reporter what it was, he answered, with a broad smile, "Boom!"

While the Chronicle should be commended for this coverage (on the heels of its recent, HR-documented slipup), this story demands far greater awareness.

For more on the problem of Palestinian incitement, visit HR affiliate Teach Kids Peace , and sign the TKP petition calling on world leaders to demand reform in Palestinian education, and media outlets to greater publicize the issue.

Why so little western coverage of these disturbing events? Martin Peretz, Editor-in-Chief of The New Republic, explains:

The PA has so many times obliged itself to Bill Clinton, George Bush, and the Israelis to stop official incitement against Jews and Israel. But the most grotesque and genocide-provoking hatred for the Jewish people and their state continues to flood the official marketplace of what you might not want to call ideas. I've known this for years, and American journalists have known it for years, but it has gone largely unreported. It's not their kind of story because it ruins the story of Palestinian moderation, to which so many reporters, columnists, and editorialists are wed.

As Israel prepares for its painful withdrawal from Gaza, HonestReporting calls on western news outlets to recognize the ongoing media restrictions, incitement and education to hate in Palestinian culture D which threaten Israel's voluntary effort to generate peace with its Palestinian neighbors.

Thank you for your ongoing involvement in the battle against media bias.

NEMSMA Position on Federal EMS Structure & Support

The NEMSMA Position on Federal EMS Structure & Support

Contact:
Darryl Coontz, President
National EMS Management Association
(903) 832-8531;

The Board of Directors of the National EMS Management Association (NEMSMA; www.nemsma.org) has issued its position in response to the papers released earlier this year by New York University (NYU) and George Washington University (GWU) that exposed national EMS issues and proposed solutions. While these papers identified limited federal funding as a central issue, NEMSMA feels that the problems with EMS go well beyond the scope of both reports.

While police and fire services are almost universally delivered directly by local governments, EMS organizations are highly diverse. The lack of consensus in the EMS community's response so far to the NYU and GWU reports is indicative of this diversity. Rather than engaging the approaches and ideals important to the various EMS-related organizations, fragmented ideas that cannot reach consensus are too often embraced. The services provided to the public by police and fire agencies are public service in nature. EMS is different because it provides public health, health care and transportation services within the public safety arena. Support and structure within the federal government must recognize and come from each of these arenas. A better approach than either of those proposed by NYU and GWU would include a blending of their solutions and adding this additional recognition. The NEMSMA proposal attempts to provide this blending, but also recognizes a need to develop a more structured approach towards interactions with Congress. Therefore, NEMSMA proposes that the EMS industry and others work collectively to achieve the following outcomes:

Outcome One: The EMS industry is better organized and organizations and individuals are engaged in the political process.

NEMSMA proposes that a group of national organizations collectively incorporate an EMS Political Action Committee (EMS PAC). Public and private EMS employers should embrace the PAC by encouraging employee contributions. EMS provider organizations should recognize their individual responsibility and adequately fund the PAC. In addition, NEMSMA proposes that national EMS associations band together to jointly organize EMS Caucuses in the US House and the US Senate.

Outcome Two: The full mission of EMS is recognized and supported by three federal departments.

In recognition of the multi-faceted EMS mission, the Departments of Health and Human Services, (DHHS) Homeland Security (DHS) and Transportation (DOT) should each maintain internal EMS offices. Each of these three EMS offices should maintain advisory committees and technical assistance centers that work directly with providers to assist them in participating with the appropriate programs.

Outcome Three: The three federal departments are coordinated by an EMS Central Coordinating Committee (EMSC3) led by the Surgeon General.

The Surgeon General of the United States is uniquely qualified to provide leadership and coordination between the federal agencies that support EMS. The Surgeon General's medical mission could assure that the guidance provided by the EMS Offices to their respective agencies is rooted from the perspective of clinically appropriate medical care. It is therefore proposed that the EMSC3 would conduct quarterly meetings under the leadership of the Surgeon General to share the needs identified by their advisory committees and to set a coordinated federal EMS vision. The departmental programs should match EMS needs. The quarterly meetings assure that individual departmental EMS goals and action plans are coordinated, consistent with an appropriate EMS vision and are not duplicative.

Outcome Four: A new Federal Commission on EMS Coordination (FCEMSC) with a statutory mission and Congressional Reporting Responsibilities replaces the Federal Interagency Committee on EMS (FICEMS).

The responsibilities of the proposed FCEMSC are in line with proposed duties of FICEMS and include an advisory committee as proposed by Senate Bill 611. In addition, the Departments of Education and Labor would be actively engaged to assure coordination of EMS workforce issues. The membership of the FCEMSC advisory committee should include geographically and organizationally diverse membership reflective of the EMS industry. This advisory committee should be well balanced in representing the interests of urban and rural, as well as police, fire, non-profit, hospital and independently based providers. It also includes a representative from each departmental advisory committee to assure a well-rounded perspective. The FCEMSC should the embrace the EMS vision of the EMSC3 and coordinate with other federal agencies tactics to help achieve the vision.

Outcome Five: A new National EMS Academy should be established by DHS at their Center for Domestic Preparedness in Anniston, Alabama.

Congress should fund a National EMS Academy (NEMSA) at the Center for Domestic Preparedness in Anniston, Alabama, at a level similar to the funding for the National Fire Academy (NFA) in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Budget responsibility for the NEMSA should be positioned within DHS, but operational oversight and direction should be provided by EMSC3.

Immediate Action Steps

NEMSMA is calling for three immediate action steps:

    1. Formation of an EMS PAC
    2. Convene an EMS Summit to include the leadership of multiple national EMS, fire and related healthcare associations. The Summit should be facilitated by the Surgeon General. The desired outcomes of the EMS Summit include:

        · Achieve industry consensus on this model or a modified version of this model
        · Identify caucus champions.
        · Establish the first national EMS Congressional agenda
        · An EMS Summit should be conducted annually to set the national EMS agenda.

People are encouraged to read the complete position statement which is posted in full text (and available for download in PDF) at www.nemsma.org/fedposition.htm.

I hope her dream come true

I Have a Dream

Shirin Ebadi

Once again explosions set by terrorist in London create much discussion in the media and among opinion makers about the destructive force of extremist religious belief.

I have repeatedly noted my conviction that non-democratic environments rear individuals susceptible to extremist beliefs. Disenfranchised citizens have not been raised in tolerant societies, have not benefited from personal freedoms such as freedom of thought and speech. People living under tyrannical rule, whether it's religious or political dictatorship, much more readily accept extremists thought.

If these individuals were raised in a country with a healthy and democratic government, if they were used to being heard through fair political processes rather than bombs and commando tactics, perhaps the world would be based on a different paradigm. In healthy democratic societies where people's demands are carried out through orderly political discourse certain members don't feel a need to resort to arms and terrorism.

Fortunately a united front of forward thinking Muslims has formed without regard of political borders. This is a harbinger of freedom for Muslims from religious extremism. This movement does not have a name or a particular leader, or a central administration with branches. It resides in the heart of every Muslim who can not bear injustice and is not willing to accept every invalid claim as religion. Religious progressives whose numbers fortunately are on the increase in Muslim countries, challenge the extremists. With logic that is at the heart of religion they prove that every act of governance, even if it claims the name, does not make it Islamic. They strive to prevent the abuse of their religion by proclaiming that Islam and democracy do go hand in hand: we can be Muslims and respect democracy and human rights since our religion is one based on equality. Islam is at odds with dictatorships and terrorism borne within the Islamic world.

In the midst of all the turmoil in the Islamic world, I have a dream. I dream of a progressive Islam that not only is completely in step with democracy and human rights, but carries the flag of these values throughout the world. In this dream, I see the oneness of all human hearts. So much so that each individual feels the pain and suffering of another as if it were his own.

I'm a dreamer and I believe reaching for our ideals has been a vital part of human history and always will be. So much of what we experience today is based on a dream or ideal.

Shirin Ebadi (Persian: شیرین عبادی; born June 21, 1947) is an Iranian lawyer and human rights activist. On December 10, 2003, Ebadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, becoming the first Iranian and the first Muslim woman to receive the prize. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirin_Ebadi

Ridgefield Soldier May Have Saddam's Car

courant.com

http://www.courant.com/news/local/hc-saddamscar-ap0801,0,5270514.story

The Associated Press

August 1 2005, 2:55 PM EDT

DANBURY, Conn. (AP) -- First Sgt. William von Zehle bought a loaded Mercedes Benz while serving in Iraq, and its accessories make him wonder about the previous owner.

The Mercedes Benz 560 has armor plating, bulletproof glass, microphones and a "crowd-control device" that consists of a series of pipes that shoot out flames from the side of the car.

"I guess it was to make sure nobody got too close," said von Zehle, a Wilton firefighter. "One of the neat things, aside from the fact it's armored, is it has microphones that allow you to hear people talking outside the car and loudspeakers so you can talk back to them."

Von Zehle, who bought the car last year in Bahgdad while serving with the Danbury-based 411th Civil Affairs Battalion, suspects the car once belonged to deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

After doing some research, Von Zehle determined Mercedes sold three armored 560s to the Iraqi government in 1988. In 1988, the Iraqi government could only mean one person.

"Saddam," von Zehle said. "I am pretty sure but I can't prove it, but yeah, this was Saddam Hussein's car."

He also came across three photos of the former Iraqi dictator driving in a white armored Mercedes.

The Ridgefield resident spotted the car in a driveway in an upscale neighborhood soon after he arrived in Baghdad in April 2003.

The anxious owner, worried the soldier was going to just take the car, began yelling at von Zehle in Arabic. But it turned out the owner spoke English as well and soon he and von Zehle were dealing.

"I told him I collect Mercedes and just wanted to take a look at the car. He asked me if I wanted to buy it," von Zehle said. "We started to negotiate. In the Middle East, you don't just buy anything. You haggle a bit."

The Iraqi man produced a sales receipt showing he bought it from "the Iraqi government." He also lived in an a section of Baghdad known for its sympathy to Saddam.

The two finally settled on a price 7 million Iraqi dinars or about $5,000. Von Zehle took his new car back to the 411th's guarded compound, right next to the United Nations headquarters.

"Everyone thought it was pretty neat," von Zehle said. "They also thought I was crazy. In hindsight, I guess I was."

Von Zehle arrived in Connecticut before the car. His Mercedes went from Jordan to Syria to Greece to Spain before finally arriving in New Jersey in May, 2004.

Von Zehle has fixed everything but a broken front passenger window. A new bulletproof window costs $14,170 and it isn't the kind of item local auto parts stores carry.

The car sits in von Zehle's garage.

"One day I'll get it registered," he said.
