New ambulance will give medics a safer ride

When an ambulance crashes, the patient strapped to the backboard rarely is seriously injured. If there's an injury, it's generally to paramedics.

But the chance of injury - or death - are about to decrease drastically for American Medical Response medics in Evansville who ride in its brand new ambulance, created specifically with paramedic's safety in mind.

The ambulance, the first of its kind in the nation, will take to the streets of Evansville this week.

"This truck is here to stimulate change," said Lee Turpen, AMR's clinical and educational services coordinator in Evansville. "Evansville has something that no one else has right now."

No corners were cut in designing the ambulance, either. Costing about $150,000 - nearly twice the cost of other ambulances - it includes every bell and whistle from NASCAR-style seating for medics in the back to running board lights under the front doors to illuminate the ground for the paramedics.

"I'm thrilled to death to see our industry going toward the safety of us in the back," said AMR operations supervisor John Wilcox, who makes several emergency runs a week. "It's about time."

Typical ambulances have poor restraint systems and lots of "hit points" on corners and sharp angles in the back. With the new ambulance, almost all protruding points have been recessed and the corners have been rounded. Added protection has even been incorporated into the floor with a rubber coating over the diamond-plated flooring.

"There's so many little things," Turpen said.

Other new features include a full-size child seat and way to secure it and a helmet that medics must wear when working in the back. In accidents, almost all medics killed die of head injuries.

"They really thought this thing through so wonderfully," he said.

The patient's privacy is now protected through a screening on the back windows and, Turpen said. A new ring of lights on the ambulance that flash when a patient is on board hopefully will make for a faster ride to the hospital.

The ambulance was manufactured by American Emergency Vehicles, and Evansville is the test site for it. Turpen is responsible for documenting the ambulance's usage, its good features and what could be improved until the vehicle reaches 250,000 miles.

"We're trying it to see if the concepts work," Turpen said.

AMR fleet mechanic Jason Henry will be responsible for helping to modify the ambulance as it needs it.

"It's really interesting being involved with it since it's the only one like it in the country," he said. "Being the only one like it, you have to figure everything out on your own."

Wilcox said it will take some time to figure out everything on the ambulance and get used to it.

"Everything has its place in the back of the truck, and - God forbid anything does happen - we will have a better chance of surviving," he said.

The Last Code Talker Dies

Charles Chibitty, code talker

WWII veteran was last survivor of Comanche group

OKLAHOMA CITY — Charles Chibitty, the last survivor of the Comanche code talkers who used their native language to transmit messages for the Allies in Europe during World War II, has died. He was 83.

Chibitty, who had been residing at a Tulsa nursing home, died Wednesday, said Cathy Flynn, administrative assistant in the Comanche Nation tribal chairman's office.

Comanche Indians from the Lawton area were selected for special duty in the U.S. Army to provide the Allies with a language that the Germans could not decipher. Like the larger group of Navajo Indians who performed a similar service in the Pacific theater, the Comanches were dubbed "code talkers."

"It's strange, but growing up as a child I was forbidden to speak my native language at school," Chibitty said in 2002. "Later my country asked me to. My language helped win the war and that makes me very proud. Very proud."

In a 1998 story for the Oklahoman, Chibitty recalled being at Normandy on D-Day, and said someone once asked him what he was afraid of most and if he feared dying.

"No. That was something we had already accepted," he said.

"But we landed in deeper water than anticipated. A lot of boys drowned. That's what I was afraid of."

"I wonder what the hell Hitler thought when he heard those strange voices," he once told a gathering.

Chibitty was born Nov. 20, 1921, near Medicine Park and attended high school at Haskell Indian School in Lawrence, Kan. He enlisted in 1941.

In 1999, Chibitty received the Knowlton Award, which recognizes individuals for outstanding intelligence work, during a ceremony at the Pentagon's Hall of Heroes

Is "Blame Israel First" the Democrats' Message?

"You get America out of Iraq and Israel out of Palestine
and you'll stop the terrorism."
-- Cindy Sheehan, anti-war protestor in Crawford
  August 15, 2005

Dear RJC Members:
The front page of just about every newspaper this weekend noted the anti-war protest of Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a soldier who was killed in Iraq. The Democrats have jumped on board Ms. Sheehan's protest – casting her and her message as heroic examples for the rest of the nation.

She has been heralded by Democrats such as Joe Trippi, campaign manager for Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean's campaign for President, Michael Moore, and organizations such as Democrats.com, MoveOn.org, True Majority, and Democracy for America.

While Democrats are busy making Cindy Sheehan their spokesman and avatar of their views, we see her as yet another example of how critics of Israel within the Democratic Party have taken control of the party's agenda.

If Cindy Sheehan's ideas are what the Democrats have to offer, then more and more American Jews will continue to see that there is no place for them in the Democratic Party.

Take another look at the quote at the top of this letter. If only it were an aberration. Unfortunately, it represents only a tip of the iceberg of Ms. Sheehan's world-view.

In a letter to Nightline, Ms. Sheehan wrote that the entire Iraq War was part of a neo-conservative plot to benefit Israel:

Am I emotional? Yes, my first born was murdered. Am I angry? Yes, he was killed for lies and for a PNAC Neo-Con agenda to benefit Israel. My son joined the Army to protect America, not Israel.
Cindy Sheehan's letter
And Ms. Sheehan, the voice of Democrat opposition to the war, reported what she would tell the President if she were to meet him (again):
You tell me the truth. You tell me that my son died for oil. You tell me that my son died to make your friends rich. You tell me my son died to spread the cancer of Pax Americana, imperialism in the Middle East.
www.truthout.org
Is that where the Democrats are on the War in Iraq – and on US policy in the Middle East? The elimination of Saddam Hussein's tyrannical rule is a victory for the oil companies and for American imperialism?

You know, as well as I, that Saddam Hussein launched scud missiles at Israel.

You know that he operated rape rooms and torture chambers.

You know that he launched chemical weapons at his own people.

You know that he housed terrorists as his guests in Iraq – terrorists such as Abu Nidal, who murdered Leon Klinghoffer on the Achille Lauro cruise ship.

You know that Saddam paid a bounty of $25,000 to the families of Palestinian homicide bombers.

You know that he was a threat to the stability of the entire region.

You also know that there were strong links between Saddam's Iraq and Al Qaeda (for a new comprehensive summary of the latest evidence, check out www.HusseinAndTerror.com).

We hope that you will use the link below to forward this message to your family and friends.

Regards,

Matt Brooks
