Fletcher's Failure

Communique: 23 August 2005              [View this article online]

FLETCHER'S FAILURE

Dear HonestReporting Subscriber,

Regardless of one's politics or particular perspective on recent events, the Gaza Disengagement is a historic time for Israel. These fateful days are filled with emotion and angst among both supporters and opposition to the Disengagement Plan. Media around the world have focused their pens and lenses on Israel. With all of this attention, one might think that respectable media outlets would be working overtime to get the story right. In this regard, it seems that the team at NBC News has failed.
Martin Fletcher

In "Settlers believe evacuation betrays God's will", Martin Fletcher of NBC News describes the Disengagement:

But, the screaming, the shooting, and cursing, that's from everyone. All the settlers have been screaming and shooting at the army...

In fact, the Disengagement was remarkable in that neither side C the evacuees nor the soldiers C bore weapons. And certainly no evacuees fired guns.

Perhaps this NBC report was a typo: In an updated online version of this article, one (but not the other) of the references to "shooting" was changed to "shouting". But why such sloppy editing in the first version? And why only a partial correction in the second version?

Further into Fletcher's report:

These youngsters who are living by themselves in these small settlements C playing the guitar, singing songs, half of them are probably smoking dope, praying, and they are violent.

"Dope"? "Half of them"? Fletcher brings no evidence for this characterization. If a similar baseless charge were leveled against another group, would it be stood for?

Fletcher appears absent from reality in describing Palestinian activity during this period:

How have the Palestinians helped ease the process?
So far they have helped... The fact that the Palestinian leadership promised calm, and so far has been the case, that is a major contribution by Palestinians to the smooth function of this process which so far has been very smooth indeed.

What about the multiple sets of mortars fired by the Palestinians at Gaza evacuation sites (on Monday and Thursday ), or the Palestinian shooting of an Israeli soldier? Or the attempted suicide bombing by Islamic Jihad of Israelis in Gaza? This is all in addition to the rhetoric of those like Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal who stated that the disengagement is "the beginning of the end for Israel."

At this very sensitive time, journalists have a duty to be extra-cautious in presenting this story in a fair and accurate manner. In this instance, Martin Fletcher and NBC News have failed.

Next Hartford Bike to Work event is August 26!

I'm planning to lead a ride from Ellington to the Manchester event even though I'm not working. It hardly matters anyway since because I work at night they've always been bike FROM work events from my perspective!

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Mario Marrero <mmarrero@crcog.org>

REMEMBER, PATRONIZE OUR BIKE TO WORK SPONSOR SHOPS,

see them listed at www.wecyclect.org.

Four Bike to Work Events August 26th, 7 to 9 AM.  Each includes free breakfast, a free gift, and an entry into our year-end raffle.  Can't attend an event?  You can still enter the raffle, go to www.wecyclect.org and download the raffle form.

Downtown Hartford, Old State House:  The Taking Care Center is hosting and offering all participants a free 2 week trial membership.   Jon Durham of the TCC will be on hand to give cyclists evaluations of their riding style.  Tune Up Demo at downtown event:  Newington Bicycle, Riding to See and be Seen.

Farmington:  UConn Health Center and Central Wheel hosting, at Central Wheel , Route 4

Glastonbury:  the Town is hosting this event at the Center Green

Manchester:  the Town is hosting this event at Charter Oak Park

Bike to Work Meet-ups:  The Central CT Bicycle Alliance (CCBA) has been putting together informal rides to the regional Bike to Work Events.   These rides are valuable for new riders that need a helping hand with traffic, and are a great social ride for experienced commuters.  And most importantly, the increased visual impact can help win over more bicycle commuters!   If you are interested in leading or finding a ride in, please e-mail Tony Cherolis ( webmaster@wecyclect.org).  He will be listing rides on the website CCBA Calendar ( www.wecyclect. org) under each Bike to Work event.  He is currently listing rides for August 26 events, September 9 event (East Hartford), and September 30 (downtown and Farmington events)  Note:  These rides are not meant to be fast!  This is to help out first time or tentative bicycle commuters.

The August Avon Ski Market Super Bike Commuter is Richard Raport of West Hartford.  Rich first tried biking to work three years ago and has now become so addicted to the pleasures of bicycling that he bikes to work 5 days a week, in all weather, rain and snow, only stopping when the temperature approaches zero.   Rich got started after a medical scare not very different from Lance Armstrong's.  After his treatment he found he was wiped out from walking one mile, which had been his regular lunchtime exercise.   A friend (current CCBA president David Ringquist) suggested that he try biking to rebuild his strength and biking to work would provide regular exercise.  The first attempt was a disaster – Rich was intimidated by traffic and late for work.   But he persevered, got a bike more suitable for commuting and tried different routes.  After a few months his commute time dropped from 45 minutes to 20 minutes, about the same as driving.   Rich felt a lot stronger with his commuting but he wondered if it really made a difference in his health.  He found the answer by joining in a research study that started when he began bike commuting.   That study showed a steady drop in weight, body fat percentage, and blood pressure over the three years of bike commuting.  Rich now commutes 10 miles a day, using a longer route that avoids the heaviest traffic and also uses his bike for most errands, including grocery shopping.   He encourages others to give it a try, "Try biking to work, stick with it for a couple of months and you will never go back to the 'I'm-stuck-in-traffic-rat-race.'  You will enjoy the fresh air and get a great work out at the same time.   My bike commute takes five minutes longer than driving and biking is even quicker than driving if traffic is heavy.  My commute keeps me healthy and happy and I don't have to worry about gas prices!" Rich will be awarded a bike jersey, courtesy of Avon Ski Market at the downtown Bike to Work event.  Send your nominations for Super Bike Commuter by replying to this email!

Bikes permitted on CTTRansit Buses:  New policy at CTTransit in Hartford , bikes may be carried onto CTTransit buses, if a wheelchair tie down is available and if the bus is not full.  If the bus fills or someone needs the tie down after the bike boards, the bike and rider will be asked to get off.   Some progress, and thanks to the bike advocate who pushed for this policy (we do not know who, if you can claim credit, let us know.)  Racks on buses coming soon, we hope.

IF YOU'RE CAR-FREE, THIS REPORTER WOULD LIKE TO TALK WITH YOU Chris Balish, a reporter with Gannett Co, Inc. ( www.Gannett.com), is doing research for a new book about transportation alternatives to the private automobile. "I'm looking for real-life success stories from people who do not own/lease a car in the United States or Canada," writes Chris. If you fit this description, Chris' questions are posted as an 18K .pdf at this link:

http://www.bikewalk.org/assets/no_car_questions.pdf

Bike to Work needs Corporate Links!  Bike to Work would like to have at least one biker representative at each large employer in the region.  The biker representative will work with us to try to get Bike to Work info onto intranet and other communication pieces, will help direct us to health and wellness staff within the organization, and in general, will help give bike to work an entrĂ©e at the company.   The goal will be to help every employer to become more bike friendly.  Interested?  Send an email to Sandy Fry, sfry@crcog.org.
