Hillel Goes All In For Charity
By Freesia Singngam

The sounds of clinking poker chips and chatter filled the room as player registration began at 5 p.m. for the Hillel's first charity poker tournament held Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. to benefit Magen David Adom, the Israeli Red Cross.

According to Danielle Selber, tournament director and 5th-semester English major, this is the first year the tournament took place at UConn. Selber heard about charity poker tournaments at the Hillel International Leaders Assembly she attended last summer and decided to hold one at UConn because "there are other campuses that do it," such as the University of Florida, and they have been very successful, she said.

The Magen David Adom is a volunteer-based organization in Israel. According to their web site, www.magendavidadom.com, they have been "supporting Israel's only official emergency medical, disaster, ambulance and blood bank service since 1956."

"[Magen David Adom] rely purely on donations," Selber said.

"I decided to organize [the poker tournament] because [the Magen David Adom] is something I am passionate about," Selber said.

Selber and the assistant tournament director, David Levy, from the Jewish Campus Service Corps, JCSC, which gives one-year fellowships to facilitate Jewish campus life, organized the event for two months with a few other students who are often at the Hillel. They set the rules, which were stated on a sheet of paper that every player received.
Each player received a starting chip count of $1,500 and played No-Limit Texas Hold 'em with eight players at each table.

Fifty people registered online for an initial count of how many people would play, but walk-ins were welcome. By 5:35 p.m. about 50 players had already shown up, and there were even more to come.

"A lot of people here play at least once a day," Selber said. Selber said she plays a few times a month.

Greg Post, a 9th-semester history and political science major, said Selber "is one of the best poker players on campus." She did not agree with that statement, but said she plays a lot of poker.

Post, in a bright blue jersey with matching shorts and flip flops, stood out with some other players who dressed up for this tournament. As seen on televised poker tournaments, some players "wear bright outfits to distract other players," Post said.

The suggested donation was $10 to play in the tournament, which ran over time as players with expert game faces vied for the top three prizes, worth well over the initial $10 each person paid. The first place winner received his or her choice of an iPod Mini or iPod Nano, second place received a $40 gift certificate to the Co-op and third place received a UConn sweatshirt.

Hillel took $200 from the pool of money from donations for the iPod purchases in order to create more incentive for more people to come. The Co-op donated half of the $40 gift certificate, and the Hillel paid for the other half as well as the sweatshirt. The rest of the money goes directly to the Magen David Adom.

"I hope it is very successful," said David Harris, Hillel activities director. "By the look of how many people are here, it looks like we'll raise a lot of money for a good cause."

Gay Marriage

You know, I've been musing on this one for a while.

Up here in Connecticut the General Assembly (Legislature) passed and Governor Rell signed a Civil Unions Law... which is really no real difference from marriage except in name. Governor Rell insisted that the bill include language defining marriage as between one man and one woman before she'd sign it- and she got that addition over the objections of several gay groups.

Now all that hubbub got me to thinking about why it is that the state is involved in recognizing any marriages at all- heterosexual or gay or even polygamous for that matter. What benefit is there to the state to officially recognize and define a relationship between individuals? Why do they make it their business anyway? They don't recognize other religious institutions like First Communions or Bar Mitzvahs.

I believe that what the state got out of marriage was well adjusted citizens. Until very recent times, it was pretty much necessary for one parent to stay at home raising the kids while the other worked for the family's upkeep. Anything that could be done to make it easier for parents to raise children in a stable environment was to the benefit of society, so the state recognized marriages.

My opinion is that in this day and age, perhaps government should get out of the marriage business altogether. Leave marriage to churches, synagogues, mosques, & temples. That way the radical gay rights movement wouldn't have anything to complain about anymore.

That's just one man's opinion, anyway.

The Dead End of Jewish Culture

This article is so, so true.

I live in rural Ellington CT and our little community has been melting away. I see it as being due to a lack of observance.

Religion, while I grew up, was a thing for home and for school. My mother kept a strictly Kosher home and made sure we kept the Shabbos and I went to Orthodox day schools until the death of my mother when I was ten. My dad, sadly, never took me to shul very much. I have vague memories of Purim and maybe Simchas Torah; but most of my recollections are of Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur- interminably long services for a child. My father never taught me the beauty of the daily Shacharis, Mincha, & Ma'ariv prayers, and we rarely if ever went to shul on Shabbos.

They say you reap what you sow, and in my family we reflect our upbringing. We all keep Kosher homes and at least celebrate Kiddush on Friday night, but most of my siblings aren't big shul attendees. I only discovered the pleasure of the connection to my creator and my community after my father died and I was trying my darndest to fulfil my obligation to say the Kaddish for him daily.

A big thing I see that keeps new Orthodox families from moving into town and helping to revive the shul is that we don't have daily or weekly services. It's hard enough to get people to come for a twice monthly Shabbos service much less daily Shacharis or Micha & Ma'ariv.

Of course, living out here with almost no Jewish community makes our young people vulnerable to intermarriage and assimilation. Out of all my siblings (four sisters and one brother) only two married Jews. Both my brother's first and second wives converted, but his sons still had to convert to Orthodox before their Bar Mitzvahs because their mom had a Conservative conversion. My sister, Becky, only married a Jewish man on her third try- and they've had no kids. My sister, Sylvia, married a Ba'al Teshuva Jewish man right off the bat, but unfortunately they've never had any kids...

I don't know where, if anywhere, this rant is taking me. But this article really raised some issues with me.

Read on and enjoy!

The Dead End of Jewish Culture One-quarter of American Jews have rejected watered-down Judaism in favor of full-strength Christianity. Why?

One December afternoon, my precious four-year-old niece Jodi* walked into my mother's suburban New Jersey kitchen and asked, "Bubbie, are you Jewish?"

"Yes, I am," my mother answered proudly.

"So am I," Jodi confided, "but don't tell Santa Claus."

I laughed when my mother told me this story, and I chuckled every time I thought of it --for twenty-two years. Last week, Jodi got married, in a Catholic church, kneeling in front of a huge gilded cross. I stopped laughing.

Apparently, Jodi's perception of Judaism as a liability grew with the years. At the age of four, being Jewish made her a persona non grata to Santa Claus. At the age of sixteen, growing up in a town whose century-old bylaws stipulated, "No Jews or Negroes," Jewish identity must have been a social non-starter. At the age of twenty, as a sophomore at Boston University, being Jewish must have threatened her budding romance with a handsome Catholic senior.

But was there nothing on the asset side to balance Jodi's Jewish ledger? After all, her Bubbie and Zeydie were committed Jews. Her Zeydie was a life-trustee of his Conservative synagogue, an ardent check-writing Zionist, a lover of everything Jewish, from Mollie Picon to Bernard Malamud. Her Bubbie spoke Yiddish, made blintzes from scratch, and devoutly attended Friday night services every Shabbat. Was there nothing of nostalgia or Jewish tradition to stay Jodi's knees from kneeling before the cross?

Was his grandmother's mince pie more delectable than Jodi's Bubbie's knaidlach?

Jews who defect to the religion of secularism are not a shanda, a disgrace. Why couldn't Jodi and Brian* have celebrated their nuptials in the neutral precincts of City Hall, or at the Botanical Gardens, or on horseback?

Obviously Brian felt strongly enough about his Catholicism to insist on a church wedding. Was his grandmother's mince pie more delectable than Jodi's Bubbie's knaidlach? Were their Christmas dinners more festive than our Pesach seders? Was his catechism class less boring than her Hebrew school? How were Brian's parents able to transmit to their son an allegiance to Catholicism which washed away Jodi's loyalty to her own Jewish heritage like a wave dissolving a sand castle on the beach?

SHOCKING DEFECTIONS

Nearly 1.4 million American Jews say they are members of a non-Jewish religion.

The problem is not idiosyncratic to my family. According to the American Jewish Identity Survey 2001, out of approximately 5.5 million American adults who are either Jewish by religion or of Jewish parentage and/or upbringing, nearly 1.4 million say they are members of a non-Jewish religion.

We are not talking here about secularism, not about Jews who opt out of going to synagogue in favor of a baseball game or the movies, but rather in favor of church. Since the vast majority of American Jews are of Ashkenazic descent, this means that 25% of the descendants of European Jews who resisted the blandishments and threats of Christianity for some sixty generations, often at the cost of their lives, are now voluntary apostates.

American Jews have been occupied for four decades in a desperate attempt to stay the tide of assimilation and intermarriage (not to even speak of their more hideous confrere: conversion). I remember as a teenager in the early 1960s sitting through sermons where our rabbi pontificated on the various solutions to The Problem. Yet exactly what is the Jewish leadership trying to perpetuate? Jewish genes? Jewish culture? A fondness for kreplach and klezmer and Isaac Bashevis Singer?

No one is ready to sacrifice one's life -- nor the love of one's life -- for a culture.

If so, no wonder the Catholics are winning. They don't strive to inculcate in their children a love for Catholic culture. They don't try to whip up enthusiasm for the celebration of St. Patrick's Day nor spend millions to make sure that every Catholic child decorates an Easter egg. They are propagating a religion, complete with God and soul and afterlife. We are pushing a culture, complete with Sholem Aleichem and dreidels and lithographs of the Western Wall. But for a culture, no matter how engaging, no one is ready to sacrifice one's life -- nor the love of one's life. Against Christianity we have pitted not Judaism, but Judaica.

History shows that substitutes for halachic Judaism have a shelf life of four generations or less. Reform Judaism's founder Moses Mendelssohn had nine grandchildren; eight of them were baptized as Christians. Zionist founder Theodore Herzl's children were not only not Zionists, they were not Jews. How many of the grandchildren of the great Yiddish writer I.L. Peretz married under a chupah? How many of his great-grandchildren know what a chupah is?

To perpetuate Jewish culture, outside of museums and university courses, at the very least you need Jews. But Jews, as all the population surveys prove, are rapidly disappearing. The first step in the multi-million-dollar enterprise of passing Jewish culture on to the next generation is to ensure that there will be a next generation.

A GREENHOUSE ENTERPRIZE

The "cut-flower phenomenon" illustrates the predicament of Jewish culture. Cut flowers are doomed to die in because they are severed from their roots, just as Jewish culture has been severed from its roots in the Jewish religion. The solution is obvious: reclaim the religious roots of Jewish culture. But roots are not the only thing a plant needs to survive.

During the decade and a half I lived in New England, my favorite hobby was horticulture. I particularly loved the arresting fragrance of gardenias; in early spring, I couldn't resist buying gardenia plants, laden with two or three beautiful white flowers and a dozen buds, usually offered for $3.95 at Woolworths. I would take my plant home, position it in a window with eastern exposure, water it copiously, and wait for the buds to open.

After one glorious, fragrant week, the open flowers would turn yellow and dry up, and the buds, reacting to the dryness in my heated house, would turn brown at their necks. I would labor to rescue them, misting the plant with a green plastic spray bottle every time I passed, a dozen times a day. One at a time, the buds would fall off. I would be left with a plant with shiny green leaves. After about six weeks, the leaves would start to turn yellow. I would run to the local nursery, buy iron granules, and scratch them desperately into the soil in the gardenia's pot.

In three months, the plant would be dead. Every time.

Not to be daunted, I invested in a small greenhouse, where the conditions would be optimum for growing gardenias. I also grew hibiscus and jasmine. I assiduously fed my plants with a solution of liquid fertilizer, meticulously regulated the temperature and humidity, and valiantly battled white fly and scale. Despite the gigantic expense of heating the greenhouse all through a snowy New England winter, I was proud of my yield: four or five hibiscus flowers a week and a couple dozen sprigs of jasmine in season. (The gardenias didn't bloom, but they didn't die either.)

About five years into my greenhouse enterprise, I took my first trip to southern California. There, in Laguna Beach, I saw hibiscus hedges eight feet tall, with solid masses of large red and pink flowers, and sprawling banks of white and yellow jasmine. To add to my envy, no one was lavishing care or expense on them. They were flourishing on their own, in their own natural environment.

To really flourish, Jewish culture needs its natural environment: authentic Jewish life.

"Jewish culture" is a greenhouse enterprise. At best, after all the energy and money is spent, it will produce a few prize specimens, like Cynthia Ozick and Andy Statman. But to really flourish, Jewish culture needs its natural environment: authentic Jewish life.

Authentic Jewish life is characterized by the study of Torah, the observance of Shabbat and Kashrut, and the thrice-daily worship of God. Not Shabbes leichter as museum pieces, but a generation of Jewish women who light their candles to usher in the holy Shabbat. Not klezmer concerts to evoke nostalgia for the shtetl, but Jewish bands playing Jewish music at Jewish weddings where Jewish communities are celebrating the beginning of a new generation of a Jewish family.

I wish my niece Jodi had had such a wedding.

Update: Hartford Dinner & Movie Event

Hi again everyone;

First off, I'm changing the date of the event to Saturday night, November 26th.

The reason for this is due to some confusion about when Ushpizin is playing in Hartford.

As you can see for yourself at http://www.ushpizin.com/screenings/localdates.html  the movie's website says clearly that it's opening in Hartford on Friday the 4th of November.

However, when I called the Crowne Palace Theatre (where they had the sneak preview on Monday) to get show times, they denied that they would be screening the movie again this week.

After several phone calls I actually ended up talking to Picturehouse Film Distribution and they told me that the website is in error.

They do plan to have a release of the movie in Hartford, but they're not sure when at this point.

I'm pushing the date forward to allow them time to have the movie open in Hartford. I figure that if Ushpizin isn't open on the 26th, I figure we'll still have the dinner and just see some other movie.

More details will be coming as soon as I get them all set. I just wanted to give you this important news.

Be Well & Be Safe.

For the "long haul" ... Wanganui's (left to right) Grant Wilson, Jon Iliffe, 10-year-old Jack Stewart and team captain Robert S

01.11.2005

By David Ogilvie

CYCLING: It's pretty good at going down the hills – but try going up them!

It's the Wanganui Motors "Quadrapeed" , a mixture of bikes, innovation and hope put together by the local team in recent weeks and aimed at the around Lake Rotorua and Lake Taupo bike races coming up in the next few weekends.

The four-seater is an increase on the three-seater produced by the same outfit two years ago and ridden the 160kmh around Lake Taupo by Robert Stewart, then eight-year-old son Jack Stewart and Grant Wilson. Jon Iliffe joins them for the campaign.

"This time we thought we would go one better," said Robert Stewart yesterday.

The new bike has been strongly tried on the road – around 500km in fact – without mishap other than blown tyres and broken spikes.

That's a worry but one of the sponsors WD Open was producing new tyres this week to try and stop that problem. And the Bike Shed has put in new spokes to help counter the roughly 300kg of weight on the five-metre long bike. The frame is steel – "and we haven't had any trouble with the frame yet, believe it or not," says Stewart. "And we don't want any either."

The bike has clocked 90kmh down hills.

This weekend's race is twice around Lake Rotorua (80km), and the 160kph around Lake Taupo is several weeks later.

Stewart says there's sense in their entry.

"You can enter as a team – and a lot of teams ride relays, one after the other – but our whole team is sitting on the one bike. That'll be something different, I'm sure."

Robert Stewart has done the Lake Taupo ride five times now, but never with an extra six legs to help.

"The whole thing is an enjoyment factor – with four of us on that bike it's quite a hoot.

"Except when we get to a hill, that is. It is hard work up hills, very hard work. But when you get to the other side and come down, you're okay."

That's where the 90kmh potential comes in.

The other sponsors are Axiam Engineering and Wanganui Motors.
