Ellington Shul: No Services this week. Shabbat Shalom! Parshat Eikev

Hello everyone;

We will NOT be having Shabbos services this week.

Our next scheduled Shabbos services are on August 19th (25th Av) at 9am.

A couple of items of news for everyone:

First, we have procured a new Rabbi to lead us for High Holiday services this year. Rabbi Yossi Wolff will be staying with us for both Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur. I'll have a little bit more about him in next week's mailing.

Secondly, if anyone was concerned about shul security with the current situation and the incident in Seattle, rest assured that the Connecticut State Police are being proactive. There hasn't been even the hint of any threats, but the Commander of CT State Police Troop C, Lt. Fox, contacted me and we're meeting to discuss any concerns and to see what may be needful in terms of security. I personally don't think that there's much for us to be worried about locally, but it is nice of them to think of us.

I'm attaching this week's Shabbat Shalom mailing from the OU. Please enjoy the links to the OU's varied articles.

Wishing everyone a Gut Shabbos!

Seaside Spirit: OU Volunteers Hit the Beach
OU Volunteers arrived on the beaches of Nitzan, where Mr. Gaydimak, a wealthy man in Israel, is sponsoring thousands of refugees from the North, in tent cities. They set up their own tents, their accomodations for Shabbat, coming at the request of the directors of the tent cities...

Seeking Refuge
A cool breeze blows on Shabbat evening as we sit on the white plastic Israeli-made swing. There are still vestiges of a multicolored sky which is slowly turning darker. Our view faces the even higher mountain community of Neve Daniel. It is quiet and serene. This is exactly what the woman sitting next to me needs.

Refugees of Time
This summer the war descended literally upon us. Suddenly, I who wanted so much to have the time to be present could not keep one focused thought. On the first day of the war, I was upstairs hanging laundry when the katusha screeched over my house, shattering windows. I bent over, covered my head and watched broken glass gather at my feet...

Summertime Blues
Today I insisted we do something educational, so we drove to a kids' science museum where I got to lay down on a bed of nails. (I had to, since going to the museum was my idea.) This point of the exhibit, so to speak, was to prove that lying on many hundreds of nails is far more comfortable than lying on a single nail...

Trivia Question
Q. In the portion of the sedra that contains the Seven Species, there is another interesting seven. What?
Last Week's Answer
Q. How many times is SHMA found in the sedra? The Haftara?
Although we say SHMA in Shacharit and Maariv, it can be seen as connected to all three davenings ( i.e. Mincha too). How so?
A. In addition to the famous SHMA of our twice daily mitzva, there are three other "commands" to hear, to "listen up", and to understand.

In the haftara, SHMA appears as the initials of the first three words of the final pasuk: S'U MAROM EINEICHEM, Lift your eyes heavenward.

Our three daily prayers are SHACHARIT, MINCHA, and ARVIT
Initials: SH'MA

Reflections From Afar
To see the smiles on the faces; to witness the pristine enthusiasm of these latter-day horticulturists. To hear the laughter and giggling. To hear the collective singing of "Hakadosh Baruch Hu... We love You," as the tomatoes and onions found their way to the tractor and eventually to the shelters in Hatzor and Kiryat Shemona.

My Trip to the North
Before moving onto the next bomb-shelter, an army official approached me and asked whether we had enough time to see something he wanted to show us. I said "sure". We followed him by car into a neighbourhood that had clearly been damaged by rocket attacks. This officer showed us a block with a row of three houses on it...
